In response to the movie’s impact, a Twitter account named “Mahua Moitra Fans,” dedicated to Mahua Moitra, shared a cutting of a news report, claiming that over 40,000 women have gone missing in Gujarat over a period of five years, citing NCRB data.
A Twitter handle named “RG for PM” also shared the aforementioned cutting of a news report, accompanied by a thought-provoking statement. The tweet alleged that around 40,000 girls have gone missing in Gujarat since 2016, urging authorities to investigate what it referred to as a “disgusting game.” The tweet further questioned whether action would only be taken once a film titled “The Gujarat Story” will be released.
Apart from this Twitter handles like UrbanShrink and Gabbar also made the similar claims.
It’s clear from all these tweets and claims that they are trying to portray that Gujarat tops the list of highest number of missing women every year and that it is not safe when it comes to girls safety. During our investigation, our team meticulously analyzed the available data on the official website of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). Our objective was to examine the figures related to missing women in the country. As we delved into the available information, we were astounded by the results. The data spanning the years 2016 to 2018 clearly showcased that Gujarat did not even rank among the top five states with the highest number of missing women. Instead, states such as Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, and Maharashtra consistently occupied higher positions in terms of the reported cases of missing women each year from 2016 to 2018.
Continuing our investigation, we delved into the 2019 data of missing women state-wise, available on the NCRB website. Once again, the findings surprised us. Despite the claims suggesting a grave situation in Gujarat, the data revealed a different reality. Gujarat did not feature among the top five states with the highest number of missing women in 2019. Instead, states such as Telangana, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra surpassed Gujarat by a significant margin. In 2019 alone, Gujarat reported 9,268 missing women. However, Telangana recorded 10,665 missing women, West Bengal reported 31,299, Tamil Nadu had 11,280, Rajasthan had 16,155, and Maharashtra topped the list with a staggering 38,506 missing women.
Moreover, the data revealed that a substantial percentage of women who went missing in every state were successfully recovered or traced by the authorities. Taking Gujarat as an example, out of the 9,268 women who went missing in 2019, an impressive 8,543 women were successfully recovered by the state. This indicates a commendable recovery rate and a proactive approach in addressing the issue. Similarly, other states also demonstrated noteworthy recovery and tracing rates, emphasizing the concerted efforts taken to locate and bring back missing women. These findings underscore the significance of considering not just the number of missing women but also the subsequent recovery and tracing efforts implemented by each state.
After this, we delved into the 2020 data of missing women state-wise, available on the NCRB website. Once again, the findings surprised us, as Gujarat did not rank among the top five states with the highest number of missing women. Instead, states such as Telangana, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra continued to surpass Gujarat by a significant margin. In 2020, Gujarat reported 8,290 missing women. However, Telangana recorded 11,404 missing women, West Bengal reported 27,434, Tamil Nadu had 12,937, Rajasthan had 16,601, and Maharashtra topped the list with 32,283 missing women.
Moreover, this data also revealed that out of the 8,290 women who went missing in Gujarat in 2020, an impressive 7,753 women were successfully recovered by the state. This indicates a commendable recovery rate and underscores the commitment of Gujarat’s law enforcement agencies in locating and bringing back missing women. Similarly, other states also demonstrated noteworthy recovery and tracing rates, emphasizing the collective efforts taken to address this critical issue.
