“Toolkit” activist Disha Ravi greeted him by saying that “As Umar Khalid spends another birthday in prison, we must keep him and others in our minds who are paying the price for exercising their constitutional rights. #MorePowerToUmar #HappyBirthdayUmar “
Moreover, many other people had wished him with the hashtags #happybirthdayUmar and #morepowertoUmar on his birthday.
Who is Umar Khalid?
Umar Khalid, Leftist and Islamist activist, and son of ex SIMI member( The Student Islamic Movement Of India) and adherent supporter of Afzal Guru who was executed on February 9, 2013, for his role in the 2001 attack on Parliament (JKLF), the lesser-known co-founder of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front.
While researching this matter, we came across a video from Zee News showing Umar Khalid hosting an event with a group of Left-leaning students to commemorate the “judicial killing” of the duo Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhatt. After the incident became violent the administration had to contact the police. The event was Against the “Brahmanical communal consciousness” and “Against the executions of Maqbool Bhatt and Afzal Guru by a court of law.”
Slogans like Pakistan Zindabad, Tum kitney Afzal maroge har Ghar sae Afzal niklega, and Kashmir se lenge Azadi were raised in that event.
In 2016, Umar Khalid made a post in support of terrorist Burhan Wani, but afterward removed it with the hope that no one would see it. However, the article is still accessible on the Google website.
It doesn’t end here. Khalid was detained by Delhi Police in connection with unrest in Delhi in February 2020. The police have invoked provisions of the UAPA to investigate the alleged “larger conspiracy” behind the riots.
Before moving further, let us know what is UAPA and what it is used for.
The UAPA is primarily an anti-terror statute that aims to “deal with terrorist activities” and “more effectively prevent certain criminal acts of people and organizations.” It was initially put into effect in 1967 to target separatist groups, and it is seen as the forerunner of legislation such as (now repealed) Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) and the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA).
The UAPA has occasionally undergone amendments to make it more stringent. Following the most recent amendment in 2019, an individual can be labelled as a terrorist; before, only organizations could be designated as terrorists. Special courts hear cases under the UAPA. In situations other than those involving traditional “terrorism” or “terrorist activities,” the law has been used.
Khalid presented a bail application before the Sessions Court. But Delhi High Court denied him bail. The court noted that Umar Khalid was a member of the WhatsApp group that was established with a specific goal in mind and that he was related to several of the accused, according to the ANI report.
As we dug more into the situation, we discovered from the tweet of Law Beat that Umar Khalid said to one of the accused Gul that “Sarkar musalmano ke khilaaf hai, bhashan sae kaam nhi chalega, khoon bahana padega” at the discussion about the riots. There was a message that stated, “Aag lagwane ki poori tayyari hai,” in the WhatsApp group of which Khalid was a member (We are entirely ready to light a fire)
One of the accused William had arranged 10 buses. 50 women & children were mobilized to go to Jantar Mantar. William said that he met Umar Khalid, who suggested that the “Jehangirpuri has many Bangladeshis & they should be ‘educated’ about CAA/NRC“
After the reports of the Delhi Jaffrabad Maujpur riots surfaced alleging that a constable had died as a result of the subsequent violence, Umar Khalid called Natasha Narwal at 4:44 PM, the person “in charge” of this site. There is a twelve-minute call.
The Delhi police had called Khalid to ask him to put an end to the violence. However, he did not stop it.
Delhi police were not able to establish more evidence as the group was deleted on March 11, 2020, after the first arrest happened on March 5, 2020.
However, these proofs are sufficient to demonstrate Umar Khalid’s anti-national mindset. By using hashtags like #MorepowertoUmar and #Youareaninspiration, leftists attempted to cover up Khalid’s misdeeds. He is in imprisonment as a result of his crimes, not because he questioned the administration.
Therefore, it is incorrect to say that Umar Khalid is an inspiration, as claimed by Amnesty India, Indian American Muslim Council, Mohammed Zubair, and his leftist friends. Birthday wishes for Khalid was designed as a movement to mislead the people by covering up his anti-national actions and gaining sympathy.
