In the midst of the continuing tension in Narayanpur village of Bastar, Chhattisgarh, where tribals vandalized the church as protest over the religious conversion of the region, a similar occurrence occurred in Mahim, Mumbai. On Saturday morning, the cemetery adjacent to Mahim Church was ransacked. Vandals destroyed eight tombstones and crosses. The Catholic community has been outraged by this move.

A Twitter user going by the handle name Mini Nair took her Twitter account and blamed the Hindu community for the vandalism that occurred in Mahim’s church. According to her tweet, Hindus plundered the graves. However, the tweet was later removed by her.

Another Twitter user condemning the incident wrote, “We urge full protection to our churches and graveyards in Mumbai. Hinduism doesn’t teach this. Sick!

Fact Check

We started our research with a keyword search “Mahim Church vandalized,” and came across a tweet by TOI. According to the tweet, the Mumbai police detained a 22-year-old youth named Dawood Ibrahim Mohammed Yakub Ansari of Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai on Sunday in connection with the damage of tombstones and crosses at the Mahim Church. The accused is considered to be mentally disturbed, but there is no obvious proof that he is receiving treatment.

With the help of the CCTV camera footage the police was able to identify the accused. The police have charged him with violating IPC sections 295 (defiling a place of worship with the purpose to insult any religion) and 447 (punishment for criminal trespass). The motive behind the offence is still unknown to the police.

Further, we acquired the press conference video of the Mumbai police. According to the press conference video, the accused, Ansari, crossed the fence and entered the cemetery, where he destroyed the tombstones and crosses.

The accused was from the Muslim community. But a few Twitter users were very keen to blame the Hindu community without knowing the whole truth to propagate their so-called “Hindu terrorism” propaganda.
