The existence of the Ram Setu bridge is a never-ending debate. This topic has again become a topic of discussion. The Telegraph published a report with a headline that reads “No conclusive proof of Ram Setu: Govt in Parliament.” Through this headline, they tried to imply that the BJP government in parliament has denied the existence of Ram Setu Bridge.
Further, Pawan khera, a member of the All India Congress Party, shared the screenshot of The Telegraph report’s headline with a claim that the Modi government stated in Parliament that there is no concrete proof of Ram Setu. The same claim was endorsed by Twitter user Swati Mishra.
Has the BJP party, which is always accused by the opposition of leaning towards Hindutva, really denied the existence of Ram Setu? Let’s verify the claim.
As Pawan Khera and Swati Mishra had mentioned in their tweets that the present government in Sansad denied the existence of Ram Setu, so in the start of our research, we checked the YouTube channel of Sansad TV and with a keyword search found a 1 hour 20 sec long video. The video is from a recent Rajya Sabha question-and-answer session.
In the video, from 45:25 minutes onward, BJP MP Kartikeya Sharma asks if the government is taking any steps to conduct a scientific study of India’s past. Replying to Kartikeya’s query, Minister of State for Space Jitendra Singh said, “I am glad to share with him that the Department of Space is actually engaged in this. As far as the question that was asked by him here concerning the Ram Setu, we have certain limitations in discovering that because the history dates back to more than 18,000 years, and if you go by history, that bridge was about 56 km long.”
He further added that, “Yes, to some extent, through space technology we have been able to discover pieces and islands, some kind of limestone shoals, which of course can’t be accurately said to be remnants or parts of a bridge. What I am trying to say in a single sentence is that it is difficult to actually pinpoint the exact structure that existed there, but there is some kind of indication, direct or indirect, that those structures have existed.”
He also emphasized on making efforts in conducting similar kind of exercises in Dwarka and other ancient sites.
After watching the complete video, we found that no where in his reply to Kartikeya, Jitendra Singh deny the existence of the Ram Setu Bridge. He stated that they have discovered some evidences of the bridge, but that owing to the bridge’s age, there are some limitations in finding. The Telegraph and a few prominent Twitter users deliberately misquoted Dr. Jitendra Singh’s statement to further their propaganda and mislead people.
