The conflict between Brahmins and Dalits in Lakhimpur has nothing to do with Buddha Katha

On February 20, The Mooknayak, propaganda-centric account, claimed in a tweet that the Brahmin community attacked the Dalit community in Hariharpur village. The Dalit community faced attack just for conducting the Buddha Katha. Also, the victims were arrested by the police.

Besides, former Delhi minister Rajendra Pal Gautam, who step down from the AAP cabinet post for participating in the religious conversion ceremony, quoting The Mooknayak’s tweet wrote that they conduct Buddha Katha to carry forward the cultural heritage, so why do Brahmins have objection?

Fact Check

We started our research with a keyword search in Hindi and English. Our team came across a report by UP Tak. In Hariharpur village of Lakhimpur Kheri district, like every year, the Dalits organized the Buddha katha.

As per the actual incident, the katha vachak made several inappropriate statements regarding Hindu religion and goddesses during the katha. This outraged members of the Brahmin community, who opposed it. Afterwards, a fight broke out between the two groups.

The police reached the scene and sent the injured to the hospital. Moreover, according to the police statement, Katha Vachak made certain offensive statements about Hindu religion and deities during the katha ritual. They also had a dispute about this topic last year as well.

Further, we found that, according to the Dainik Bhaskar report, the main accused, Katha Vachak, Chandraprakash Gautam, got arrested. The Dalit community invited him to Hariharpur with the purpose of narrating the Katha to the Dhamma Katha audience. Besides, at present, the police have filed a case against ten people based on a complaint received from both parties.

Apart from that, our team also got a copy of the FIR that was filed in this case. Four of the ten accused are members of the Buddha Katha group, while six are from the Brahmin side.

Moreover, the Live Hindustan report states that a complaint against the katha vachak was also made a day prior to the conflict. People had complained about the indecent remarks made about Hindu deities. The police called both groups to settle the dispute. Notwithstanding the complaint, Katha Vachak used the objectionable statements about Hindu deities again the next day. That’s when things became heated.

Hence, after knowing all the aspects, it is apparent that the fight did not occur as a result of the Buddha Katha but because the Hindu faith and deities were disrespected during the Katha. To further its anti-Brahmin propaganda, the Mooknayak presented the half-baked story. Thus, the claim made by them is misleading.
