During the farmers’ protest led by Congress on the outskirts of the National Capital, the official X handle of the Congress party, along with several of their leaders, claimed that the series of five reports from the National Commission on Farmers, chaired by MS Swaminathan, commonly referred to as the Swaminathan Commission Report, has been removed from the Ministry of Agriculture and Welfare website.
Congress party wrote on X, ‘ Modi government gave Bharat Ratna to MS Swaminathan ji, which was welcomed by the entire country. But now the news is that the Swaminathan Commission report itself has disappeared from the website of the Agriculture Ministry! Earlier all volumes of the report were available on the ministry’s website. After all, what does the Modi government want to hide from the farmers and the people of the country? Is this not a step to kill the rights of the farmers and mislead them?’

Why every time a conspiracy is hatched to kill the rights of the farmers and mislead them?’

Fact Check
Without delay, our investigation started with an examination of the Ministry of Agriculture website. It revealed that all five reports released by the National Commission on Farmers, under the chairmanship of agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan, were present and easily accessible.
Subsequently, we uncovered a tweet from the Ministry of Agriculture explicitly refuting the allegation of removing the Swaminathan report from the website.
The tweet said, “Regarding recent false claims on social media suggesting the removal of Professor MS Swaminathan’s report on the National Commission on Farmers from the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmer’s Welfare website. We’d like to emphasize that the report is indeed available on our website at agriwelfare.gov.in (agriwelfare.gov.in/en/PolicyDiv) under the NCF report section.

The National Commission on Farmers, led by Prof. M. S. Swaminathan, presented a series of five reports between December 2004 and October 2006. The concluding report, succeeding the initial four, detailed the causes of farmer distress and the surge in farmer suicides. It advocated for a comprehensive national policy to address these issues. The report’s findings and recommendations encompassed areas such as access to resources, social security entitlements, and key aspects like land reforms, irrigation, credit and insurance, food security, employment, agriculture productivity, and farmer competitiveness.
Hence, contrary to the assertions made by the Congress party in an apparent effort to intensify the farmers’ protest, all five reports of the Swaminathan Commission remain accessible on the Ministry of Agriculture website.
Claim | The Swaminathan Commission Report is no longer present on the official website of the Ministry of Agriculture. |
