On Friday and Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on a two-day tour to Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. He visited Tamil Nadu on Friday to attend the Gandhigram Rural Institute’s (GRI) 36th convocation ceremony in Dindigul.
Amidst his visit to Tamil Nadu, the fake news peddler, Sathish Reddy from the TRS party, shared an image with a caption that reads “Today, Tamil Nadu said #GoBack ! Tomorrow, Telangana says #GoBackModi” to portray the people in Tamil Nadu opposed PM’s visit. A black balloon with “Modi Go Back” written on it can be seen in the picture shared by him.
Fact Check
We started our research, using the reverse image search, from there we found a short piece of report dated April, 2018, on Behindwood.com with the headline “Giant Balloon with Modi Go Back message floated by DMK.” According to the article, in 2018 Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Chennai to attend the Defence Expo, and many parties opposed his arrival, shouting slogans such as ‘Modi Go Back’ in Guindy. The DMK party also flew a black balloon from the region with a banner that said the same thing as the slogan.
Another report from 2018 stated that when PM Modi arrived in Chennai for the inauguration of the Defense Expo, people came out in big numbers wearing black outfits and holding black flags and balloons while yelling ‘Go Back Modi.’ People were demonstrating against the government for failing to form the Cauvery Management Board as ordered by the Supreme Court. Police held film makers Bharathiraja, Ameer, Vetrimaran, and Gowthaman when they staged a demonstration outside the airport, shouting anti-Modi chants and demanding CMB.
The image shared by Sathish Reddy is from 2018 and the claim that PM Modi’s recent visit was opposed in Tamil Nadu is fake.
