AAP misleading claim on law and order of Punjab state

On December 28, 2022, the official Twitter handle of the Aam Aadmi Party tweeted, “the Punjab police became the country’s no.1 Police, who put the report card of its work in front of the public. Moreover, they also attached an infographic with the tweet showing all the work done by the Mann government in 2022 to maintain the law and order and to create a better environment in the Punjab state”.

In the tweet, AAP claimed that the Punjab police destroyed 22 drones in 2022. It means that they have given all the credit for shooting down 22 drones to Punjab Police.

So, this is where doubt towards the claim by AAP and the Mann government arose. So, we tried to Fact Check the Mann government’s claim. During Fact-check, we found the reality a little different.

Fact Check

We started our research by cross verifying all the parameters claimed by AAP, while searching for drone claim using the keyword search  “drone attacks in Punjab in 2022,” we came across a report by tribune India. According to this report, the sources in the BSF said that in 2022, there have been 254 drone activities in Punjab compared to 67 in 2021. Out of those 254 instances of drones being spotted, BSF personnel opened fire on 226 occasions. Moreover, according to the BSF, they have shot 9 drones down and another 12 may have landed or fallen due to other reasons.

Apart from this, using the keyword search “Punjab Police statement on drone attacks,” we came across a report by ANI from December 27, 2022. According to this report, the Inspector General of Police (Punjab), Sukhchain Singh Gill while addressing a press conference said that Punjab Police along with the BSF shot down 23 drones this year.

According to AAP, Punjab Police shot down all the drones on their own. However, Punjab Police IG himself said during an interview as mentioned in the ANI report above that they did it with the help of BSF. Besides, according to BSF, they shot down 9 drones alone in Punjab without the help of Punjab Police and rest with the Punjab Police.

So, all these points prove that AAP’s claim is misleading. Hence, it is clear that the Mann government tried to overshadow BSF’s work and intentionally give all the credit to Punjab Police for political gains.

Moreover, we also found a report from The New Indian Express from 2021. According to this report, the AAP also targeted former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and the central government back in 2021 when the Central government increased the jurisdiction of the checkpoint from 15 km to 50 km along the IB for the BSF in Punjab to curb the incidences of arms and drug trafficking on the IB with Pakistan.

Thus, it shows that AAP has always overshadowed the heroics of BSF and has always doubted its credibility and work. AAP Punjab published the misleading report where they fail to give the due credit to BSF.
