Fact Check

Since the tweet was deleted and our team only had the screenshot, we did a reverse image search of the image representation used in the tweet.

After doing a reverse image search, we found that the video is seven years old and not from Uttarakhand. As per the One India report, where they have used same image for the representation of the incident, the video is from 2016, Delhi.

Moreover, according to the One India article dated February 1, 2016, the Aam Aadmi party released the video targeting the Delhi police. The students in the video, including some women, are from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). On January 30, 2016, they staged a protest outside the RSS office. The protest was in response to the death of Rohith Vemula, a PhD student at Hyderabad University.

Rohit Vemula reportedly committed suicide after he was expelled from Hyderabad University.

Also, to know more about the incident, we went through another report by News 18. It states that the students who were protesting aggressively raised slogans like “Delhi Police Murdabad.” Consequently, the Delhi police ended up beating the students.

Afterward, the Delhi police gave a statement saying the protestors not only broke barricades but also threw sticks and banners at the cops.

Lastly, on YouTube, we used the keywords “Delhi police beating students protesting for Rohith Vemula” to get the complete video. Through keyword search, our team found One India News channel video which has the same image representation used for thumbnail.

Moreover, the description of the video states that the lathi charge took place on January 30, 2016. The All India Students Association (AISA) was protesting outside the RSS office against the death of Rohith. The Delhi police began lathi charging.

Hence, after analyzing all the aspects, it is clear that the video shared by activist Sandeep is not from Uttarakhand. Thus, the video shared by him is fake. In fact, it is not from any recent incident.
