We started our fact-checking research by verifying a statement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During our search, we came across a YouTube video on his official channel, showcasing the inauguration of the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 on January 17, 2025, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. In his speech, approximately five minutes in, PM Modi mentioned that 2.5 crore vehicles had been sold, he remarked, “Many countries don’t have a population as large as the number of vehicles we sell every year.” He further stated, “Selling approximately 2.5 crore vehicle annually demonstrates how demand is growing exponentially year after year.” Here, PM Modi was including commercial vehicles, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers in the count not just the cars.
Additionally, we found a report by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), which highlights India’s growing vehicle demand trend from 2018-19 to 2023-24. The data shows that in 2022-23, India sold 38,90,114 passenger vehicles, and this number increased to 42,18,746 in 2023-24. A similar growth trend was observed across commercial vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers, and quadricycles, with total vehicle sales reaching 2,38,53,363 in 2023-24, compared to 2,12,04,162 in 2022-23.
The claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated 2.5 crore cars were sold in India last year is misleading. PM Modi mentioned 2.5 crore vehicles, which includes all types of vehicles, not just cars.
