PM Modi’s AI Observation Proven Right: Fact-Check Confirms Bias in AI-Generated Images

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently visited Paris to attend an AI summit, where he emphasized the need for global collaboration to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) for economic growth, social transformation, and sustainable development. Co-chairing the summit alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, PM Modi began his speech with a unique “experiment.”

He explained, “If you upload your medical report to an AI app, it can interpret the results in simple language, free from technical jargon, making it easier to understand your health status.” However, he then pointed out an intriguing bias in AI systems. “If you ask the same app to generate an image of someone writing with their left hand, it will most likely depict a right-handed person,” he noted.

The reason behind this, he explained, is that AI models are predominantly trained on datasets that feature right-handed individuals. However, leftist and Islamist groups on social media seized upon this statement, mocking PM Modi and insinuating that he was incorrect or uninformed about AI.

Sumon Kais wrote while sharing a video, ‘The Prime Minister of a nation with 1.5 billion people is explaining AI to the world’s top leaders—some of whom hold PhDs. He doesn’t even realize what he’s doing wrong… lol. India has a bright future under Modi. I’m convinced.’

Dhruv Rathee ( Parody) stated, ‘Narendra Modi explains about AI to top leaders of the world. Even they are confused what he is talking. This is so embarrassing.’

Ashok Swain asserted, ‘India needs to be ashamed of electing this loudmouth idiot as their leader.’

Fact Check

We began our fact-checking process by conducting the same experiment. First, we asked Grok AI to generate images of a person writing with their left hand. To our surprise, all the images produced depicted individuals writing with their right hand.

To expand our research, we repeated the experiment using ChatGPT, which also generated images of right-handed writers instead of left-handed ones. Similarly, when we tested Microsoft Copilot AI, it too produced images of people writing with their right hand.

Additionally, a Business Today report corroborated our findings, further validating the observation.

Therefore, it is evident that PM Modi was not wrong. His statement accurately highlighted a subtle yet significant bias in AI systems, which tend to generate images of right-handed individuals due to systematic conditioning in their training data.
