The Chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Mohan Bhagwat, spoke at the book launch in Nagpur on October 7, 2022.
The newspaper, Patrika, reported this and quoting Mohan Bhagwat stated that “Sangh Chief Mohan Bhagwat said that the caste system was an old idea. Now it must be forgotten. The Brahmins should atone for the mistakes that have been committed earlier. There is no harm in accepting the mistakes of the ancestors.”
Fact Check
Our team decided to analyze the entire video from the book launch event to check whether the report by Patrika is true. Since Mohan Bhagwat is the Chief of the Rashtriya Swamsevak Sangh (RSS), we searched through the YouTube channel of RSS and found a 26 minute 36 second long video uploaded on October 8, 2022, from an event in Nagpur.
In the video, Bhagwat can be heard saying that the concepts of varna and caste should be “forgotten” as they are a thing of the past. He further added that previous generations made mistakes everywhere, and India was no exception. And if you think that admitting that our ancestors made mistakes will make them inferior, think again. Its because everyone’s ancestors made mistakes.
The RSS Chief did not make any specific caste references in his remarks, contradictory to the Patrika newspaper’s report. In order to forward its propaganda, the Patrika misquoted Bhagwat’s remarks. However, when people called them out for their mistake, after two days, they apologized and corrected their statement.
