No, Ganga Vilas cruise was not stuck in Bihar

For the past two days, the Ganga Vilas cruise has been making headlines. Ganga Vilas is India’s first luxury cruise ship. It will travel 3200 kilometers through 27 river systems in five Indian and Bangladeshi states in 51 days.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the cruise on January 13, 2022. The 51-day trip includes 50 stops in key towns, including Patna, Bihar, Sahibganj, Jharkhand, Kolkata, West Bengal, Dhaka, Bangladesh, and Guwahati, Assam.

The newly announced cruise is intended to attract travelers from all over the world, giving a boost to Indian tourism. However, a propaganda regarding the cruise has begun on the opposition side.

The Samajwadi party leader and the former CM of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav, sharing the video which claimed the Ganga Vilas left from Varanasi and got stuck in Bihar, wrote, “Now, do you understand the difference between cruise and boat? Will these passengers be given ‘Vayu Vilas’ through aeroplane?

The propaganda journalist, Rohini Singh, claiming that the route planning was not executed properly wrote, “Ganga Vilas was launched earlier, but route planning is being done later. Almost the same has been happening since the launch of demonetisation to GST. Launch first, planning later.”

The Congress leader, Gurdeep Singh Sappal, stated in his tweet that the route planning was not done properly, it was done in a hurry. Hence, Ganga Vilas got stuck in sand. This all is being done to suppress the discussion on Bharat jodo yatra.

The fake news peddler, Bolta Hindustan, also made the same claim and stated that the due to lack of water in Ganga, the cruise got stuck in Chhapra. People were rescued by NDRF.

Fact Check

In our research, after reviewing all of the mainstream media outlets coverage of this topic, we came across a tweet by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI). On its official Twitter account, the IWAI denied the claim that the Ganga Vilas got stuck in Bihar and emphasized that the Ganga Vilas arrived in Patna on time.

Further, we came across the Press Information Bureau clarification on this matter. The PIB in its press release stated that the the cruise sailed on NW-1 as planned, stopping in Ghazipur on 13 January 2023, Buxar on 14 January 2023, and Mauzampur (Arrah) on 15 January 2023. The cruise ship arrived in Patna around 4.45 p.m. on January 16, 2023, after stopping in Doriganj. Upon reaching Doriganj, the tourist also visited the fort.

We also discovered a video uploaded by PIB Bihar on its Twitter account, in which the cruise ship arrived in Patna on time and the passengers were greeted by locals. The routes are properly planned, and the ship is reaching every destination as per the schedule. Tourists also visited Patna Sahib’s Takht Sri Harmandir Sahib.

Hence, the claim that the Ganga Vilas became stranded in Bihar and passengers were rescued by the NDRF is fake. Oppositions and liberals are circulating such false rumours to further their propaganda and show that the Ganga Vilas is going to be the failure.
