The war in the Middle East between Iran and Israel took a dramatic turn after a U.S. bomber struck three Iranian nuclear sites. Amid this escalation, social media users are sharing four videos showing ships exploding at sea, claiming that Yemen’s Houthi terrorist group have entered the conflict and begun targeting U.S. cargo ships in the Red Sea.

Fact Check
We began our fact-checking process by performing a reverse image search on the keyframe of the first video. This led us to an article published by NBC News on August 30, 2024, which featured a video that matches the one shared by the claimant. According to the report, the footage shows Houthi militants planting explosives on an oil tanker, posing a serious threat of a Red Sea oil spill. The article further stated that the Houthis had planted explosives on a Greek-flagged tanker and detonated them, endangering the Red Sea.
Next, we conducted a reverse image search of the second video, which led us to an article published by ABS-CBN on July 17, 2024. The article featured the same video and reported that an unmanned watercraft had caused minor damage to the Chios Lion’s port side as part of a series of Houthi attacks. The Liberia-flagged oil tanker, along with another vessel, was sailing about 100 nautical miles northwest of Yemen’s port city of Hodeidah when it was attacked, according to the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC).
For the third video, a reverse image search led us to The Times of India report published on August 24, 2024. It reported that fires broke out on the Greek-flagged oil tanker Sounion, which had been attacked earlier that week by Houthi rebels. The vessel was reportedly abandoned by its crew and left adrift in the Red Sea.
Finally, a reverse image search of the fourth video pointed us to a The National article published on October 4, 2024. The report stated that Iran-backed Houthi militants had released dramatic footage of a major attack on the oil tanker Cordelia Moon, which was hit by missiles and explosive-laden boats.
