After the announcement of 2024 Lok Sabha election results, as BJP prepares for a third term by allying with Telugu Desam Party (TDP) under the NDA, a video is going viral on X (formerly Twitter). The video shows TDP members burning a photo of current elected Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu in a protest. The video is circulating with the claim that Chandrababu Naidu is facing protests in Andhra Pradesh for supporting Modi despite widespread condemnation.

Samajwadi party leader and the frequent fake news peddler sharing the video stated, “As soon as Shri Chandrababu Naidu gave his letter of support to Modi, massive protests started in Andhra Pradesh. The public has given a mandate against Modi ji. The road ahead is very difficult for Modi BJP.” (Archived link)

Fact check

In our fact-check research, we extracted different key frames from the video and did a reverse image search on Google. On reverse image search, we found a link to a TikTok video that was posted on March 30 and the text accompanying it. When we translated the text of the video, it read, “In Guntakal constituency, Telugu Desam Party workers set Nara Chandrababu Naidu’s photo on fire after he took Rs 150 crore and gave tickets to leaders from neighbouring constituency instead of constituency leaders.”

Taking hints from here, we conducted a keyword search on Google and found a report by The New Indian Express, which featured the same frame of fire burning seen in the viral video. The article reveals that the video is two months old and unrelated to the TDP’s alliance with Modi.

According to the Indian Express article, the video captures unrest that erupted after the TDP announced its final candidate list for Assembly and Lok Sabha seats in March, which led to significant unrest among TDP members. This announcement caused significant dissatisfaction among TDP members over the selection of the candidates.

In the Guntakal constituency, supporters of Jitender Goud were upset that the ticket was given to Gummanur Jayaram, who had resigned from the YSRCP citing the party’s pressure to contest as Kurnool MP. TDP members said Gummanur Jayaram was a non-local and the Guntakal seat was allotted to him after taking Rs 30 crore from him.

Similarly, in Satyavedu (Tirupati district), TDP members protested the decision to field Koneti Adimulam, who had recently joined the party from YSRCP.

There was also unrest in Cheepurupalli and Anantapur constituencies. In Cheepurupalli, the then TDP in-charge Kimidi Nagarjuna resigned from the party as he was unhappy that the Assembly seat was given to his uncle K Kala Venkata Rao. In Anantapur, followers of former MLA V Prabhakar Chowdhary were particularly upset that the Anantapur Urban seat was given to Daggubati Venkateswara Prasad. They vandalized the TDP office, damaging furniture and photographs of party leaders and setting them on fire while raising slogans against party supremo N Chandrababu Naidu and general secretary Lokesh.

Conclusion: The video showing TDP members burning Chandrababu Naidu photo is shared with a false claim that his photo was burnt by TDP members over his support for Modi. However, the protest took place in March due to discontent over the selection of candidates for the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.
