Old News of Puran Joshi Getting Arrested in Beef Smuggling Shared With Misleading Claim

A graphic showing a saint dressed in saffron robes is being shared with the claim that 185 tonnes of cattle meat were seized from the cold storage of Pandit Puran Joshi, and that he has now been granted bail.

Sharing the graphic, the handle @/pitamaha_b52862 wrote, “I heard that Brahmin Genes Puran Joshi has got bail. In the month of Sawan, he will now sell goods at a discount.” (archived link)

Fact Check

In our fact check research, we traced the graphic on AI detection tool and found that the graphic showing the saffron clad saint is AI generated.

In our further research, we searched the keyword Puran Joshi on Google and found media reports of November 2024. According to the report of Navbharat Times dated November 28, 2024, this case is from Greater Noida where Hindu organizations had seized a container full of banned meat. This meat was brought from West Bengal to the cold storage on Bishara Road. When the investigation was done, the meat was seized on November 16, 2024. During this, a case was lodged against 7 people, including the owner of the cold storage, Puran Joshi. Apart from this, Dadri SHO Sujit Upadhyay and Rap Amit Pratap Singh were also suspended for negligence.

According to Amar Ujala report, in the case of beef smuggling, the Uttar Pradesh Horticulture and Food Processing Department Directorate has suspended the license of the cold store from where the meat was seized.

Furthermore, we conducted a keyword search to find any reports confirming that Puran Joshi was granted bail, however, no such reports were found.
