Not Maneka Gandhi, but Kejriwal ordered to give a sewing machine to the Nirbhaya case convict

The fake news peddler and leader of the Aam Aadmi Party, Naresh Balyan, while criticizing the Maharashtra BJP government for using vehicles purchased by the Mumbai Police earlier this year under the Nirbhaya Fund to combat crime against women to provide Y-Plus security to MLAs and MPs, claimed in a tweet that BJP leader Maneka Gandhi had ordered to give a sewing machine to the convict in the Nirbhaya rape case.

Fact Check

Using the keyword search “Maneka Gandhi ordered to give sewing machine to the accused in Nirbhaya rape case,” bizarrely, we discovered a few media sources stating that it was the government of Delhi’s Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, who ordered to give Rs 10,000 along with a sewing machine to the juvenile convicted in the Nirbhaya rape case.

According to the Amar Ujala and The Hindu report, in December 2015, prior to the release of the juvenile in the Nirbhaya rape case after completing his three-year term, the Ministry of Women and Child Development under the Government of Delhi proposed a plan for his rehabilitation. According to this, the Delhi government decided to provide him with Rs 10,000 in cash support as well as a sewing machine so that he may operate a tailor business and earn a living.

The claim made by Naresh Balyan is fake. Ironically, it was his government that decided to offer the accused Rs 10,000 along with a sewing machine.
