Fact Check

During our fact-checking process, we initiated a reverse search of the viral video to ascertain its authenticity. In this pursuit, we stumbled upon a YouTube video posted on June 24, 2020, by Asianet Newsable channel. Remarkably, the visuals in this video were identical to those in the viral content. Yet, our astonishment grew when we uncovered the truth behind the video’s facade.

According to Asianet Newsable, the whole video was staged. As per Asianet Newsable, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) pourakarmikas embrace a role beyond just maintaining the city’s cleanliness. Amid the prevailing unease stemming from rising COVID-19 cases, these pourakarmikas, who find themselves among the most vulnerable, conceived an innovative idea—a video. The initial video featured two pourakarmika women, one of whom portrayed an arrogant homeowner unwilling to offer water within her premises. The pourakarmika seeking water was left taken aback. Subsequently, the haughty figure emerged from her residence, placed a water bottle by the roadside, and instructed the pourakarmika to retrieve it.

The video’s rapid circulation induced anger among officials who, deceived by its apparent authenticity, reacted strongly. A subsequent video, shared the next day, clarified the true purpose—it was an awareness initiative. All the individuals featured were indeed pourakarmikas hailing from Bengaluru’s Singasandra ward. Sarfaraz Khan, the Special Commissioner of Solid Waste Management (SWM) at BBMP, also appreciated their work.

Further in our investigation, we stumbled upon a corroborating report from Asianet Newsable again. Astonishingly, this report echoed the identical visuals portrayed in the viral video. As per this report’s account, the video’s authenticity was far from reality; it was, in fact, a meticulously staged production.

In sync with our previous findings, this report confirmed that the video’s purpose was rooted in raising awareness. Its intended message was swiftly disseminated in the aftermath of the video’s circulation. Notably, all the individuals featured in the video were genuine pourakarmikas from Bengaluru’s Singasandra ward.
