Recently, a photograph of a woman has gone viral with a claim attached to it. According to the claim, the woman in the picture supposedly converted to Islam, citing a reason related to Hinduism. The claim suggests that the woman embraced Islam due to a perceived disparity in Hindu beliefs. It alleges that in Hinduism, it is acceptable to consume cow urine, yet some adherents allegedly hold prejudices against individuals from the Dalit community, preventing them from drinking water from their hands.
A Twitter handle named Yasmeen Khan shared the viral picture and wrote, There is no better and true religion than Islam and there will never be, suggesting that the woman in the picture converted to Islam because it is the only one true religion.
Apart from this, Twitter handle named Mahinoor Khan and IND Story’s also shared the viral picture and made similar claims.

During our investigation, we decided to conduct a reverse image search of the viral picture to determine its authenticity. In this process, we stumbled upon a report by Hindu Existence, which featured a similar image to the one that had been circulating widely. However, what we discovered in this report left us shocked and perplexed. According to the report, the woman in the picture is identified as Jaya Bhandari, who has allegedly filed a police complaint against her Muslim husband, Waqar Danish Anwar, and his family. Her complaint accuses them of forcefully converting her to Islam. The details provided in the report are troubling and unsettling.
Moreover, the report indicates that Jaya’s in-laws purportedly coerced her into adopting a Muslim name and compelled her to consume beef, a meat prohibited in her previous religious practice. Additionally, it alleges that when Jaya refused to pay a dowry of ₹5 lakh, she faced severe physical assault.
Further delving into our investigation, we conducted a keyword search using the terms “Jaya Bhandari forcibly converted into Islam by her husband.” This search led us to a report published by Hindustan Times on January 8, 2015, which shed more light on the matter. Interestingly, the woman featured in the report is the same as the one depicted in the viral picture.
According to this report, Jaya Bhandari, a divorcee in her mid-thirties, shared her distressing experience of being forcefully converted to Islam by her second husband, Waqar Danish Anwar. Jaya and Waqar initially met while working at a hotel in Ranchi, marking the beginning of a tumultuous journey.
Jaya’s account reveals that she was subjected to various forms of coercion and abuse. The report highlights that her in-laws allegedly changed her name, compelling her to adopt a Muslim identity. Additionally, they allegedly forced her to consume beef, which contradicted her religious beliefs. The situation further escalated when Jaya refused to comply with their demand for a dowry of ₹5 lakh, leading to physical assaults.
Hence, all these points paints a clear picture that the woman in the viral picture did not willingly embrace Islam, nor did she make any disrespectful comments about Hinduism as claimed by Yasmeen Khan and others. Rather, her true identity is Jaya Bhandari, who fell victim to the harrowing experience of being forcibly converted to Islam by her second husband. Jaya’s story exposes the grave injustices she endured, including the coercion to change her name, the forceful imposition of a new faith, and the compelled consumption of beef, all of which conflicted with her own religious beliefs and personal autonomy.
