On July 26, 2023, a controversial post made its way through social media when former cricketer and known purveyor of fake news, Kirti Azad, shared a picture that purportedly showed Veer Savarkar and an unidentified person in a suit shaking hands. However, in his post, Kirti Azad went on to claim that this alleged encounter took place in Lahore back in 1942 and suggested that it involved two notorious figures – Savarkar and Jinnah – conspiring to divide India.

So, is it true that the unidentified man with whom Savarkar is shaking hands in the picture was Jinnah? Let’s Fact Check.

Fact Check

During our investigation, we first did the reverse image search of the picture shared by Kirti Azad to know its source and authenticity. During this, we came across a PDF of a book entitled “SWATANTRYAVEER VINAYAK DAMODAR SAVARKAR” on the Parliament Digital Library website. This book, published in February 2003 under Rule 382 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha, contained a strikingly similar image on page number 26, the very same one shared by Azad.

To our astonishment, the book offered a compelling revelation regarding the true identity of the individuals in the photograph. According to the book, the pictured moment captures none other than Veer Savarkar engaged in a handshake with Sir Stafford Cripps, who led the Cripps Mission to India.

As our investigation delved even deeper, we stumbled upon yet another intriguing piece of the puzzle. This time, it was a PDF of a book titled “Savarkar and His Times,” written by Dhananjay Keer and published back in 1950. Moreover, as we eagerly flipped through the pages, and there it was, on the very pages 260 to 261, the familiar photograph we had been scrutinizing earlier. However, this time, it came with a decisive caption – “Savarkar and Cripps.”

The revelation was striking, as the caption left no room for doubt. The person standing opposite Veer Savarkar in the photograph was unmistakably identified as none other than Sir Stafford Cripps himself.

Hence, all these points leaves no room for doubt: the unidentified person in the photograph shared by Kirti Azad is unequivocally revealed to be none other than Sir Stafford Cripps, not Jinnah as the former had claimed. This revelation exposes a troubling truth, shedding light on the potential agenda behind Azad’s actions – a sinister ploy to mislead the masses.
