On October 8, 2022, Prisoners of Conscience India stated that Khalid Saifi, co-founder of the NGO United Against Hate, is a social activist, philanthropist, and voice for minorities. The POC wrote in a tweet “Khalid is a community leader, Social activist & co-founder of United Against Hate arrested in the Delhi Riots conspiracy case. He has been vocal against hate speech, anti-Muslim violence, and discriminatory policies of the BJP.”

The claim was also supported by the Anti-Hindu page, HindutvaWatch with large follower base.

Fact Check

Due to Khalid Saifi’s history of involvement in anti-national activities, our team decided to investigate the claim by POC in its tweet. In our research using the keyword search “Khalid Saifi“, we came across a report by Times Now. According to the report, the Crime Branch of Delhi Police arrested Khalid Saifi, because he was one of the key conspirators of the violence that took place in the Chand Bagh area during the anti-CAA riots, in February 2020.

His name was also placed in the chargesheet by the Delhi police with the connection to the Delhi riots. As per the Delhi police statement, he also attended the meeting at Shaheen Bagh on January 8, 2020, for the anti-CAA riots.

Our further probe led us to the report by Zee News. The report mentions that the Special Cell of Delhi Police had founded out that Khalid Saifi’s NGO United Against Hate had received money from an NRI of Singapore for anti-CAA riots. He had even visited many countries to raise funds for the riots and met Zakir Naik. Not only that, but he had also been funded by a terror funding Islamist organization PFI, which has been recently banned by the Government under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for terror funding.

Lastly, in our research, we came to know that on April 8, 2022, the Delhi court discarded the bail plea of Saifi under Section 437 of CrPc with Section 43-D(5) of UAPA in connection to anti-CAA riots. As per the chargesheet of the bail plea Justice Amitab Rawat had said that Saifi is also on the list of the accused who was in connection with the other accused of the riots.

The above-stated facts show that the claim made by the Prisoners of Conscience India and the Anti-Hindu page HindutvaWatch is fake to mislead the people by portraying the image of Saifi as a social activist, philanthropist, and voice for minorities. However, Khalid Saifi is one of the key conspirators behind the Delhi riots, that burnt Delhi and had taken lives of many people
