In a tweet, a Twitter user claimed that Buddhists who advocated for the repeal of Article 370 and opposed Muslims had now taken to the streets of Ladakh to protest the repeal of Article 370 and demanded that it be reinstated.
In our research, using the keyword search “Buddhist community in Ladakh protesting for Article 370,” we came across a report by Hindustan Times. As per the report, people belonging to the Buddhist community are indeed protesting in Ladakh, but the reason is different from what the Twitter user is claiming.
In Ladakh, two groups, the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance, protested, not for the reinstatement of Article 370, but for the following:
The Buddhist community in Ladakh is now dissatisfied with the current system, which makes all decisions without involving local populations. Ladakh has just one Lok Sabha representative, which is causing polarization. There hasn’t been a single recruiting procedure in the region since Article 370 was repealed. They further accused the union territory administration of meddling unnecessarily with the functioning of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils in Leh and Kargil.
Nowhere the Buddhist community has demanded the restoration of Article 370. Hence, the claim made is misleading.
