On December 20, 2022, the official handle of Indian American Muslim council tweeted, “The largest eviction drive in Assam, a state ruled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will make thousands of people homeless, mostly Muslims”. Apart from this another Twitter handle with the name Indian Muslim tweeted, “In the state of Assam, the extremist Indian government carried out a large-scale eviction campaign for Muslims, demolished their homes with bulldozers, and deployed more than 1000 Indian Police personnel in the area”.
So, from these tweets, it is clear that both these Twitter handles are trying to show and convey that the BJP government is committing atrocities on Muslims by demolishing their homes.
So, is it true that the BJP government is intentionally demolishing only Muslim homes? Let’s Fact Check.

We started our research with the keyword search ‘eviction drive carried out by Assam Government’ we came across a report by Zee News. According to this report, the land on which the eviction drive is going on was encroached by encroachers. The encroachers have encroached more than 980 bighas of land in the Bhumuraguri Grazing reserve, Jamai Basti, Rampur, Kadamoni area.
Moreover, according to the report the nearby Morigaon District administration officials of the area claimed that notices were sent to around 1,000 alleged encroacher families during October, asking them to clear the land.
Further we found tweet by ANI according to it Leena Doley, Superintendent of Police of Nagaon district, many encroachers have already left the area. She also said that the eviction drive is going peacefully.
Apart from this, we also found of a statement of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a report of Indian Express. According to the report, Himanta Biswa Sarma while answering the questions of the opposition on the anti-encroachment drive in the assembly said that “All people, whether Hindus or Muslims, will have to vacate Sattra land. We request all to vacate the encroached land or else we will do eviction there,” he added.
Hence, all these points prove that the Assam government is not committing any atrocities on Muslims in Assam as they are demolishing the houses and properties of only those who have illegally encroached the government land. So, the viral claims against government are false and misleading.
