An old comment by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently sparked controversy on social media, in which he claims that Swami Vivekananda, at 30, requested Jamshedji Tata to establish a factory in the country.

By sharing the Prime Minister’s comments on social media, he is being mocked, and by presenting many explanations for this, people are also attempting to show the Prime Minister wrong.

RJD supporter and Jamia Millia Islamia graduate Tariq Anwar, SP Mumbai North West media in-charge Salaam Islam Khan, pro-Congress journalist Krishnakant, and others shared this video on Twitter.

In the viral video, the Prime Minister can be heard saying, “Who would know that the communication between Swami Vivekananda and Jamshedji Tata, the correspondence between the two, has been seen by anyone, then will know that time Hindustan was a slave, even then Vivekananda, a 30 year old young man, is telling a person like Jamshedji Tata to set up industries in India, make in India.”

During our investigation, we tried to know the truth behind PM Modi’s statement regarding correspondence between Jamshedji Tata and Swami Vivekanand. In our research, using the keywords “Jamshedji and Vivekanand” on Tata official website’s search bar, we found an article titled “A Meeting on Board The Empress of India” published in March 2019. This article has an audio transcript of Jamshedji Tata’s letter to Swami Vivekanand.

According to the transcript, on his journey from Japan to Vancouver (Canada) in May 1893, J. Tata told Vivekananda that he was considering importing Japanese matches and coming to America in quest of technology that would help India become a great industrialized nation. Vivekananda encouraged him to create in India and conveyed his vision of connecting Western scientific and technical achievements with Indian Integralism and Humanism. Tata’s reaction was obvious in a letter written five years later.

During our further research, on the Twitter handle of Tata Steel, we discovered a transcript of the letter that the Prime Minister had mentioned during his speech on the occasion of Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary in 2018.

Aside from that, when searching keywords linked to Vivekananda and Jamshedji Tata on the Internet, news stories published by several media organizations were discovered, in which Vivekananda’s crucial counsel to Jamshedji Tata is cited.

All of these evidence indicate that the Prime Minister’s statement that Vivekananda advised Jamshed ji to establish industry in India is totally factual and publicly available.
