No, PM Modi will not handle Ministry of Science and Technology, Viral Claim is Misleading

A graphic image is going viral on X, claiming that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will now handle the Ministry of Science and Technology. Social media users are sharing the graphic to mock PM Modi, arguing that he lacks a scientific temperament yet leads the Science and Technology Ministry.

Journalist Anil Yadav wrote, ‘That’s alright, which hides the ship from radar in the clouds,Make tea using sewer gas, Who can be a greater scientist than him?’

Fact Check

We began our fact-checking process by verifying the current Minister of Science and Technology in India. Our search revealed that the ministry is presently headed by Dr. Jitendra Singh. Furthermore, we found on Wikipedia that Dr. Jitendra Singh has been in charge of the ministry since July 7, 2021. Before him, the position was held by Dr. Harsh Vardhan.

Next, we conducted a reverse image search of the viral infographic and found that India TV’s official X (Twitter) profile had shared the graphic on July 7, 2021. The caption of the post read: “PM Modi himself will handle the Ministry of Science and Technology.”

To gather more context, we conducted a Google search using relevant keywords and found an India Today report published on July 8, 2021. The article stated, ‘Giving top priority to the Ministry of Science and Technology, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to actively monitor the ministry himself. Dr. Harsh Vardhan, who was the Union Health Minister and also the Minister of Science and Technology, resigned from the Cabinet ahead of the reshuffle.’

Additionally, we found a Deccan Herald report from July 8, 2021, which confirmed, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi will monitor the Ministry of Science and Technology, while Home Minister Amit Shah will oversee the Ministry of Cooperation, in addition to his responsibilities in the Home Ministry.’ The article also mentioned that Dr. Jitendra Singh serves as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Therefore, the claim that PM Modi is the Minister of Science and Technology is false. The misleading claim originates from a 2021 infographic that circulated when PM Modi decided to monitor the ministry after a Cabinet reshuffle in July 2021, following Dr. Harsh Vardhan’s resignation and Dr. Jitendra Singh’s appointment as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology.
