No, PM Modi did not seek restrictions on the Twitter handles of the Bharat Jodo Yatra

Sandeep Singh, congress supporter and a part-time activist, on November 7, 2022, taking jibe at PM Modi, posted a news headline from Aaj Tak stating that an order had been issued to ban Bharat Jodo’s Twitter account. In his tweet, he attempted to portray that PM Modi is scared of the growing popularity of the Bharat Jodo Yatra campaign and is demanding restrictions on the Bharat Jodo’s social media handles.

Fact Check

Our team decided to fact check the claim made by Sandeep Singh. We started our research using the keyword search “Order to block Twitter handles of the Bharat Jodo campaign,” we came across a report from The Indian Express. According to the report, M Naveen Kumar, the manager of MRT Music, filed an FIR at Yeshwanthpur police station against Rahul Gandhi, Jairam Ramesh, and Supriya Shrinate under the provision of Copyright Act.

Further, after going through a few more media reports, we found an FIR copy of the complaint filed by Kumar. As per the statement given in the complaint files, Jairam Ramesh used a famous song from the film KGF 2 without permission in two videos for the Bharat Jodo Yatra campaign and he posted the videos on his Twitter handle.

Following the filing of the lawsuit, the Bengaluru court ordered Twitter to temporarily prohibit the Twitter profiles of the Indian National Congress (INC) and Bharat Jodo Yatra for unlawfully using sound recordings from the film KGF chapter-2 and violating MRT Music’s statutory copyright. It also ordered the Congress accounts to remove the tweets and to refrain from using the plaintiff’s intellectual material “unauthorized and unlawfully” until the next hearing date.

The decision to restrict the Twitter accounts of the Congress and the Bharat Jodo campaign was made owing to a copyright issue. It would be a stupid and ignorant act to include the Prime Minister’s name in it. Sandeep Singh, just like any other Congress supporter, entirely disregarded the fact that the court was seeking a prohibition on these accounts because they used MRT music without permission and attempted to mislead the people and smear the Prime Minister’s image by labelling him frightened in a tweet.
