PM Modi’s Appreciation for Chandrayaan 3 Landing Misleadingly Tied to Asia Cup Victory

On September 17, 2023, the Indian cricket team achieved a remarkable victory by defeating Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup final with an impressive 10 wickets. This triumph marked their 8th Asia Cup title win, a momentous occasion for Indian cricket.

However, the very next day, on September 18, 2023, a propagandist named Dr. Hafsa shared a video tweet featuring an interesting twist. In the video, it appeared that Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was engaged in a phone call, seemingly offering his congratulations to someone.

The intriguing claim made by Dr. Hafsa was that Prime Minister Modi had personally reached out to the family of Mohammed Siraj and the entire Indian cricket team to extend his heartfelt congratulations for their triumphant victory in the Asia Cup final.

So, is it true that PM Modi personally called Siraj’s family and the entire team and congratulated them on the Asia Cup victory? Let’s Fact Check.

Fact Check

During our investigation, we first did a reverse search of the video that Dr. Hafsa had shared. During this, we came across a YouTube video, originally uploaded on August 23, 2023, on the official PMO India YouTube channel. To our amazement, the visuals in this video were an exact match to those presented in the video shared by Dr. Hafsa.

However, what unfolded next left us both startled and intrigued. According to the official statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in India, the video was a recording of Prime Minister Modi extending his congratulations to ISRO Chief Somnath via a phone call. The context was the successful landing of Chandrayaan 3, a momentous achievement for the Indian Space Research Organization. During the call, Prime Minister Modi explicitly mentioned ISRO Chief S. Somnath.

The twist in the tale, however, lay in the fact that the video shared by Dr. Hafsa had been cleverly edited. It omitted the crucial part where Prime Minister Modi mentioned ISRO Chief Somnath’s name, leading to a misleading interpretation of the video’s content.

After this, we came across another YouTube video, this time from India Today, which had been uploaded on the same date, August 23, 2023. The visuals in this video were also an exact match for those in the video shared by Dr. Hafsa.

According to India Today, this video portrayed a significant moment in Indian history. It captured Prime Minister Modi in the act of making a phone call, seemingly reaching out to ISRO Chief Somnath to convey his congratulations. The reason for this momentous call was the successful landing of Chandrayaan 3, a remarkable achievement for the Indian Space Research Organization.

As our investigation unfolded, we took another significant step by conducting keyword research with a focus on the phrase “PM Modi congratulates ISRO chief on the phone for Chandrayaan-3 mission success.” During this, we stumbled upon a report from the Hindustan Times, published on the same date, August 23, 2023, that shared the very same visuals as the video previously shared by Dr. Hafsa. According to this report, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in South Africa’s Johannesburg at the time, had made a heartfelt phone call. His call was to none other than the Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), S. Somanath, to extend his warm congratulations.

The reason for this historic call was the triumphant landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the moon, an achievement that filled India with pride. During this telephonic conversation, Prime Minister Modi shared his appreciation with ISRO Chief Somanath, remarking, “Somanath ji… your name Somanath too is linked to the Moon. Your family members too would be elated. Hearty congratulations to you and your team.” What was particularly fascinating was the Prime Minister’s pledge to visit ISRO’s headquarters in Bengaluru to personally greet the entire team involved in this remarkable mission.

Hence, all these points prove that the claims made by Dr. hafsa that PM Modi personally called Siraj’s family and the entire team and congratulated them on the Asia Cup victory are misleading. PM Modi indeed congratulated the Indian cricket team for winning the Asia Cup trophy but he didn’t personally call Siraj’s family and the entire team to congratulate them.
