On November 8, 2022, demonetisation completed 6 years. Social media users attacked the BJP administration and shared old video clips and remarks by BJP officials and a few media figures, ridiculing them while recalling the hardships experienced when demonetisation was implemented.

On the day when demonetisation completed its 6th anniversary, the social media convenor of TRS party and the fake news peddler, Sathish Reddy, posted an old video of PM Modi with a caption that reads “Ghar mein shadi hai, lekin paise nahin hai” Look at the evil smile of Modi. Look at the way he is making fun of the misery of the poor. Demonetisation is the biggest disaster of mankind.”

In his tweet, he claimed that PM Modi mocked the agony and inconvenience faced by poor people when demonetisation was implemented. Lets verify the video and claim made by Sathish Reddy.

Fact Check

At the bottom of the video shared by Sathish Reddy, we spotted the ticker (news headline) “PM Narendra Modi in Japan.” Using the ticker as a keyword search on YouTube, we discovered a 25:27 mins long video from PMO’s YouTube account posted on November 12, 2016. The video is from the Prime Minister’s interaction with the Indian community in kobe, Japan.

In the video PM Modi discussed how India is receiving historically high FDI and is making rapid economic growth. While thanking and appreciating every Indian for accepting the decision to demonetize currency notes despite the problems caused, he spoke about his ambition to remove poverty from the country.

After watching the entire video, we discovered that reality differs from what Reddy is attempting to convey through his tweet. In the video from 10:22 mins onwards, the PM discussed natural calamities such as the earthquake and tsunami that occurred in Japan, as well as the Fukushima crisis. He appreciated how the Japanese people considering it their responsibility endured inconveniences such as power outages and food/water shortages without complaining.

He went on to add that while he was reading all of this, and then when he came here, he saw how great these people are, and how much agony they go through for the nation. He used to think if this can happen in our country as well. But, now, he can say with experience and certainty that, if given the chance, the ordinary man of India would not lag behind to show responsibility.

From 13:17 mins the PM further saluting the people of India said that “Aapko bhi pata hai 8 taarik ko, achanak 8 baje 500 aur 1000 ke note band ho gaye. Ghar mein shaadi hai lekin paise nahi hai. Maa bimaar hai, 1000 ke noto ka thapaa hai lekin mushkil hai. In sab ke bawajood bhi, takleef hai ye pata hai, khudko hai pata hai, aas pados mein hai pata hai, uske bawajood bhi log muh mein ungli daal daal kar puchhwa the ki Modi ko kuch bolo. Kuch Modi ke khilaaf bolo. Aisa bhi chal raha tha lekin main desh ke logo ko sau sau salam karta hu. Koi 4 ghante line mein khada raha, koi 6 ghante khada raha. Takleef jheli lekin desh ke hit mein is nirnay ko aisehi swikaar aur swaagat kiya hai jaise 2011 mein Japan ke har naagrik ne karke dikhaya tha.” While he was saluting the people, the crowd was heard shouting Bharat Mata ki jai in the background.
