Fact Check

We began our fact-checking process by conducting a Google search related to the topic. During the search, we found information on the website of LAUGFS Petroleum, which stated that the cost of petrol in Sri Lanka is approximately Rs. 309 per litre for 92 Octane and Rs. 371 per litre for 95 Octane. Meanwhile, the price of diesel is Rs. 283 per litre, and super diesel costs Rs. 313 per litre.

Additionally, data from the Global Petrol Prices website corroborated the information provided by LAUGFS Petroleum, confirming that the price of 1 litre of petrol in Sri Lanka is Rs. 371.

For context, the octane rating of petrol indicates its stability under high pressure. Higher octane fuels (such as 95 or 98) are more stable and perform better in high-performance engines, while lower octane fuels (such as 87 or 92) are suitable for regular engines. Using the correct octane level ensures efficient and smooth engine performance.

Next, we compared these prices with petrol prices in India, using Delhi as a reference. In Delhi, the price of petrol is ₹94.77 per litre. When we convert Sri Lanka’s petrol prices to Indian currency, the cost is approximately ₹89 per litre for 92 Octane and ₹107 per litre for 95 Octane.

Moving on to the claim that Sri Lanka imports all of its petroleum from India, we found data from OEC World, which shows that Sri Lanka imports $236 million worth of crude petroleum from Russia and $132 million worth of crude petroleum from India.

In addition, OEC data on refined petroleum imports indicates that Sri Lanka imported $40.3 million worth of refined petroleum from the UAE and $1.6 billion worth of refined petroleum from India.

According to Trading Economics, Sri Lanka’s imports of crude oil from the UAE totaled $840.55 million in 2023, based on data from the United Nations COMTRADE database on international trade. Furthermore, data from the World Bank shows that in 2022, the primary countries from which Sri Lanka imported fuel included India, the UAE, Singapore, Malaysia, and Russia.
