No, Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena has not broken alliance with NDA to join TDP

Sadaf Afreen, a well-known source of fake information, recently tweeted and claimed (Archived link) that the Jana Sena Party, led by actor and politician Pawan Kalyan, had cut connections with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The Jana Sena Party was founded in 2014 and has been a member of the NDA coalition since its formation.

Sadaf added in her tweet, “With the 2024 Lok Sabha elections looming, there appears to be a trend of parties disassociating themselves from the NDA alliance.” Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena Party is said to have split with the NDA. In addition, former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandra Babu Naidu’s party is said to be forming an alliance with the TDP (Telugu Desam Party). This implies a sequence of exits from the NDA coalition. What might be the explanation behind this? Not long ago, the NDA suffered a huge loss in Tamil Nadu when the AIADMK, led by Jayalalitha, opted to break its affiliation with the NDA.”

Reports of the Jana Sena Party allegedly ending its alliance with the NDA have garnered widespread attention. Another pro-Congress handle on the X platform going by the handle name @/Politics_2022_ (Archived link) while claiming that the Jana Sena has broken its alliance with the BJP wrote, “BJP bites the dust again from its alliance partner, this time in Andhra Pradesh. Jana Sena, led by Pawan Kalyan, has ditched the NDA and will go with the TDP in the 2024 Loksabha and Vidhansabha elections. As per sources, they can approach INDIA but Congress won’t take them before the Telangana elections, as it already backfired in the 2018 elections. BJP’s foot is shrinking rapidly after the 38-party NDA meet in Delhi held in August.”

Another handle known for its hate mongering against the Hindu community, @/Delhiite_ (Archived link), also claimed that the JSP has exited the BJP-led NDA to join hands with the TDP.

Besides, propagandist Roshan Rai (Archived link) wrote that after exiting the BJP, the JSP is likely to join hands with the INDIA alliance soon. He further added, “Another wicket down for Modi. Looks like ED, CBI, and Income Tax got more assignments in Andhra Pradesh.”

The reports of the Jana Sena Party ditching the BJP-led NDA were also shared by handles like Democracy Times Network (Archived link), NorthEast Now (Archived link), Arun Maddy (Archived link), who is a Tamil Nadu-based News 18 journalist according to his X bio, and the pro-Congress handle Jago India (Archived link).

Fact Check

In the beginning of our research, we sought an official statement from the Jana Sena Party and its leader, Pawan Kalyan, but were unable to uncover any official confirmation confirming that the JSP had departed from the BJP-led NDA in order to extend support and establish an alliance with the TDP. Following that, we did a Google keyword search, using keywords such as “Jana Sena Party exits NDA,” to find media reports to get a clear picture.

According to the report by the Deccan Herald, after reports of the JSP leaving the NDA began circulating on social media, Pawan Kalyan refuted the claims on Thursday, clarifying that the JSP was still a part of the BJP-led national alliance. According to the report, he remarked during his Varahi Vijaya Yatra address in Mudinepalli in Krishna district that the YSRC is behind this false propaganda and went on to say that as long as he is alive he wants the JS-TD coalition to thrive with the BJP’s permission. He hopes to work together with them in the future elections to unseat the YSRC government. He even stated that if his party leaves the BJP’s alliance, they will notify the party first.

In addition to the Deccan Herald report, Only Fact discovered a video of a public assembly at Mudinepalli addressed by Pawan Kalyan. In the video between 56:32 and 57:14, the rough translation of the Pawan Kalyan’s statement says, “I respect a visionary leader like Chandra Babu Naidu, I will never lose respect for him. I want to tell YCP that I never left NDA. I always have immense respect for JP Nadda, Amit Shah, and NaMo. My only aim is to dethrone YCP in Andhra Pradesh with the blessings of TDP and NDA.”

Moreover, we found another video uploaded by TV9 Telugu. The thumbnail of the video says, “I will tell myself if I am leaving NDA,” implying not to pay attention to the rumors. Further, in the video, Pawan Kalyan counters the YCP leaders, saying, “YCP don’t need to be my spokesperson. I never left NDA. I have the phone numbers of PMO, Amit Shah and other NDA leaders. I don’t need you to tell what is happening between us.”

Besides, we contacted a multilingual expert, who confirmed that in both videos, JSP Chief has stated that the party is not severing its alliance with the NDA. They are simply extending their support to the TDP. In the future, if the JSP breaks its alliance with the NDA, they will notify the party first. YCP does not need to spread such false rumours.

Furthermore, we came across a tweet shared by ANI (Archived link) on its X handle in which they shared a video of Bolisetty Satyanarayana in which he clarified JSP chief Pawan Kalyan’s statement about supporting TDP by saying, “I wish to clarify what Pawan Kalyan Garu said in a meeting yesterday. He went on to say, “Though I am in a part of NDA, I am talking about Telugu Desam because they are in a weaker position today.” He did not state that he is no longer bound by the NDA. We are with the NDA and will continue to support the TDP since their experience is required to drive the YSRCP out of Andhra Pradesh.”
