A video of India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is viral on social media these days in which the FM is meeting an old man and taking blessings from him. However, many Twitter handles claim that the old man with whom FM is meeting and taking blessings is his father. A Twitter handle named RVAIDYA while sharing the video of the Finance Minister wrote, “at Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s father’s house. A father accords a royal traditional welcome to his daughter which she politely sidesteps and introduces her colleagues to her father”, he added.
Apart from this many other Twitter handles also tweeted the same.
So, is it true that the old man with whom the Finance minister is meeting is her father? Let’s Fact Check.

We started our research with the reverse image search of the viral video’s keyframe which led us to the Facebook post of the official handle of Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman from December 3, 2022. The Facebook post quotes, “Smt Nirmala Sitharaman visits Siva Madam in Varanasi and interacts with the family members of Mahakavi Bharathiyar, including his 96-year-old great nephew Shri K. V. Krishnan“.
Moreover, another Facebook Post of Nirmala Sitharaman from the same date, quotes, “Siva Madam is the place where Mahakavi Bharathiyar stayed during his visit to Varanasi in the 1900s”.
Apart from this, we also came across a tweet by the official handle of the office of Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman from December 3, 2022, sharing the same pictures and video with the same caption as in Facebook Posts of Nirmala Sitharaman.
After Comparing them all, we find out that the video shared in the Facebook Post and Twitter post by the office of Nirmala Sitharaman is the same that has been shared by the Twitter handles mentioned above. However, the old man in the video is not Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman’s father as claimed by the above Twitter handles but the great-nephew of Mahakavi Bharathiyar.
Hence, all these points prove that the claims made by some Twitter handle on the viral video of FM Nirmala Sitharaman are false and misleading.
