No, Kirron Kher did not say “Rape is a part of our culture and we can’t stop it”

In a dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party, Neha Yadav, the spokesperson for the Samajwadi Party, claimed in a tweet that actor and BJP politician Kirron Kher had issued a statement saying, “Rape is a part of our culture. It is unstoppable.”

Kirron Kher actually said something that controversial? Let’s fact-check the claim.

Fact Check

We started our research with the keyword search “Kirron Kher said rape is part of our culture” and came across a video on YouTube uploaded by ANI on January 22, 2018.

Reacting to the rape case in Haryana, Kirron Kher said, “Ye jo sthithi hai, ye aaj se nahi hai. Ye kayi varsho se hai. Agar aapko lagta hai ki ye aaj utpan hui hai, to aisa nahi hai. Aap barabari ka darzaa dijiye sab apni ghar ki auraton ko aur unse kandhe se kandha hi nahi, dil se dil mila kar aage badhiye. To mujhe lagta hai mindset change hoga. Logo ke mann mein jo gandagi hai wo saaf hogi.”

Furthermore, we tried to find out if she had made such a controversial statement recently, but we could not find any media story or video. This claim has been going viral on social media from time to time. In 2020-21, many social media users distorted her statement and claimed that she has said rape is a part of our culture.

The claim made by Neha Yadav is misleading. Kirron Kher gave this statement nearly four years ago and said that a shift in thinking might put a stop to such incidents.
