On October 6, 2022, social media convenor of TRS party Y Satish Reddy shared a video (video has now been deleted) by claiming that a BJP leader was tharshed by farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh.
Later on, other users Syed Shoaib and Gautam also shared the same video.
Fact Check
Our team minutely watched the video to check its authenticity, we found that some words were written in Punjabi language outside the shop and alleged farmers and police personnel wearing Punjabi Turban. This made us suspect that the viral video can be from Punjab.
Using keywords like ‘BJP politician thrashed and Punjab farmers,’ we found an Indian Express report dated July 2021 with the feature photograph of the same BJP leader featured in the viral video. According to the report, Patiala BJP in-charge Bhupesh Agarwal was beaten by alleged farmers during a protest against farm laws in Rajpura, Patiala.
Lastly, in our research, we came across a tweet of ANI news, dated July 11, 2021, and it shared some images from the incident when BJP leader Bhupesh Agarwal was attacked. We discovered parallels between the incident of the viral video and the images posted by ANI; the words inscribed in Punjabi on the shop’s door were an exact match.
According to the aforementioned facts, it is evident that the TRS social media convenor’s claim that farmers attacked a BJP leader in Lakhimpur Kheri is fake. The viral video is from Patiala, Punjab, and the footage is older than a year.
