On April 22, in the meadows of Pahalgam, Pakistani terrorists carried out a brutal massacre, killing 26 Hindu tourists after identifying them by their religion. The incident deeply shocked the nation. Just days later, reports and social media posts went viral, claiming that a female gynecologist, Doctor C.K. Sarkar from West Bengal, had refused to treat a Muslim patient due to religious bias. This alleged incident has sparked widespread outrage, frustration, and raised serious concerns about the impartiality and ethics of medical professionals.

Tarun Gautam claimed, ‘This is Doctor C.K. Sarkar, a gynaecologist. She refused to treat a pregnant Muslim woman because of Pahalgam terrorist attack. This is unethical and must not be ignored. Requesting IMA/WB govt to cancel her license immediately. She doesn’t deserve to be a doctor.’

Kavish Aziz wrote, ‘People of your religion are killing people of my religion, you people are murderers.” Your husband should be killed by Hindus, so that you can feel the pain of Hindus…You people should only go to madrassas and mosques for your treatment, where Muslims are taught to become terrorists.” Pregnant Muslim woman Mahfooza Khatun of Kolkata was being treated by gynecologist Dr. CK Sarkar for a long time but after the Pahalgam incident the lady doctor refused to give her treatment. The doctor said, “After the Kashmir incident, I am not going to see any Muslim patients,’

Amoxicillin claimed, ‘This is Doctor C.K. Sarkar, a gynecologist. She refused to treat a pregnant Muslim woman because of the Pahalgam terrorist attack. This is unethical and must not be ignored. Requesting IMA/WB govt to cancel her license immediately. She doesn’t deserve to be a doctor.’

Dr. Aratrika Ganguly, DOAM, Saba Khan, Ethnic Bengali, Bengali baba and Pakistan Now shared a similar claim.

Fact Check

We began our fact-checking process by searching for relevant information on Google. We found a report by India Today, published on April 27, 2025. According to the report, a pregnant woman named Konkona Khatun accused Dr. Champakali Sarkar, a female gynecologist, of refusing her medical treatment due to religious bias. Khatun, who lives with her husband Sheikh Saifulla in a multi-storey apartment in Maheshtala, filed a police complaint after the alleged incident.

The controversy started after a photo and an audio message went viral on social media, claiming that Dr. Sarkar denied treatment to Khatun because she is Muslim. The message also linked the incident to the terrorist attack that took place in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22.

In response to these serious allegations, Dr. Sarkar denied the claims. She posted a video on social media, stating that the audio clip was fake and edited. She said she has never discriminated against any patient in her 30 years of medical service. Dr. Sarkar also said she plans to take legal action against those behind the false message.

Dr. Champakali Sarkar, in a video statement, firmly refuted all allegations against her. She said, “I am Dr. C.K. Sarkar, a practitioner for the past 30 years in Behala, South 24 Parganas. I strongly believe in medical ethics. All patients are equal to me, regardless of caste, religion, or race. I always try to treat my patients ethically and to the best of my ability. Some individuals seem to have a personal issue with me. I urge everyone not to believe in rumors. There have been attempts to sabotage my career. I came to know about these allegations through social media and news reports. Such rumors often spread during times of crisis, but I trust that you will not fall for them.”

Additionally, we found a press release from the West Bengal Doctors Forum (WBDF), shared on Facebook by Pramod Ranjan Roy on April 28, 2025. The statement categorically denied the allegations made against Dr. Sarkar. It clarified that, after directly contacting the doctor and verifying the facts, they found the claims to be untrue. The patient, Konkona Khatun, was actually seen by Dr. Sarkar at her residence, at the patient’s own request. The forum also verified the UPI payment receipt for the consultation, which was properly dated and timed, confirming that the consultation did take place.

The statement further mentioned that some private household conversations, unrelated to the patient, might have been overheard unintentionally. If those remarks offended the patient, it still falls outside the professional responsibility of the doctor, as they were not part of the consultation.

Pramod Ranjan Roy also shared a screenshot of the UPI payment made by Konkona Khatun to Dr. Champakali Sarkar.

Considering all three pieces of evidence— Dr. Sarkar’s video testimony, the West Bengal Doctors Forum’s official statement, and the financial transaction, it is clear that the allegations made by Konkona Khatun are baseless. Dr. Sarkar, adhering to her professional duties attended to the patient who also paid the consultation fee.
