No, Dimple Yadav is not the only Woman MP in the history of India who won the Lok Sabha elections unopposed and reached the Parliament

On January 15, 2023, TV reporter Pragya Mishra shared a picture of Dimple Yadav on X and wrote, “Happy birthday to the only woman (@dimpleyadav) in history who won the Lok Sabha elections unopposed and reached the Parliament.”

Journalist Nishu Chauhan also shared the picture of Dimple Yadav on X and wrote, “Happy birthday to the only woman MP @dimpleyadav in the history of India who won the Lok Sabha elections unopposed and reached the Parliament. May Bholenath grant you a happy and long life!”

Apart from this, another X handler named Ajit K shared the picture of Dimple Yadav and wrote, “Happy birthday to Bhabhi ji, the only woman MP in history to reach Parliament after winning the Lok Sabha elections unopposed @dimpleyadav.”

Fact Check

During our investigation, we did a keyword search with the relevant keywords and came across a report by Live Hindustan published on April 23, 2019. According to this report, Lakshmi Bai Sangam who was a great freedom fighter won the Lok sabha elections unopposed from Vikarabad in 1957 on a congress ticket.

Continuing our research, we stumbled upon yet another intriguing report, this time from Zee News, dated May 23, 2019, mentioning the Lakshmi Bai Sangam’s name. According to this report, In the country’s second Lok Sabha elections held in 1957, 7 candidates were elected MPs unopposed. All the MPs elected unopposed had contested the elections on Indian National Congress ticket. The Indian National Congress candidates who were elected as MPs unopposed include the names of D. Satyanarayana Raju, TN Vishwanath Reddy, Lakshmibai Sangam, Bhagwati Vijay Chandra, Mangroobabu, T. Ganapathy and T Siddannajappa S.

Furthermore, we stumbled upon another insightful report from Live Hindustan, dated April 20, 2019. This time, the spotlight is on Sushila Ganesh Mavalankar, who stepped into the political arena after the passing of her husband, GV Mavalankar, on February 7, 1956. According to this report, Congress fielded Sushila Ganesh Mavalankar as its candidate in the by-elections held on the Ahmedabad seat. No candidate stood against her and she won unopposed here.

Hence, all these points prove that claims of Dimple Yadav being the only woman MP in the history of India who won the Lok Sabha elections unopposed and reached the parliament are misleading. Before Dimple Yadav, the trailblazing Lakshmi Bai Sangam and Sushila Ganesh had already etched their names in history by securing unopposed victories in Vikarabad and Ahmedabad, respectively.
