Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, on October 24, 2022, shared the India Today’s report and claimed that among 10 most polluted cities in Asia, 8 are from India; but Delhi is not in the list.

He further appreciating his management system stated that Delhi is no longer the world’s most polluted city and his goal is to become the world’s cleanest city.

Along with Kejriwal, many other media outlets, including DNA, Outlook India, The Hindu, and Live Mint, through their report’s headline portrayed that Delhi was not on the list of the world’s most polluting cities.

Fact Check

In our research, we found that the reality is different from what Arvind Kejriwal and many media outlets are trying to portray. According to the IQAir ranking, which was revised on October 24, 2022, Delhi ranks first among 50 cities from across the world in terms of pollution.

Further, after checking the AQI data of from CPCB on ncdc.gov, we discovered that the AQI of Delhi on October 24, 2022, recorded 312 (Very poor).

The AQI is measured on a daily basis. Based on this, it cannot be said that Delhi has become a pollution-free. As per the historical data available on the apicn.org (the same source which India Today cited) from August 2022 to October 2022, the air quality in Delhi is unhealthy. The tally for hazardous quality is 144 (minimum) and 634 (highest) (maximum). It has already reached the hazardous data index’s minimal threshold.

Furthermore, we found a media report by India Today, the same media outlet that, through its misleading headline, attempted to present Delhi as being off the list of the world’s most polluted cities, stating that Delhi was named the world’s most polluted city for the fourth consecutive year. In 2021, 12 of the 15 most polluted cities in Central and South Asia were in India. In 2021, PM2.5 concentrations in New Delhi increased by 14.6%.

The another report by DNA reveals that according to a research by the Air Quality and Health in Cities, issued in the month of August, 2022, by the US-based Health Effects Institute, India’s capital city New Delhi is the most polluted city in the whole globe, with West Bengal’s Kolkata taking second place.

Hence, Arvind Kejriwal’s statement that Delhi has become a pollution-free city is misleading. The above-mentioned data shows that Kejriwal is trying to mislead people by presenting manipulative data.
