A video from Madhya Pradesh showing a man named Golu Gurjar viciously hitting another man named Mohsin with slippers and forcing him to lick his feet while yelling religious epithets at him is going viral on Twitter.
The viral video was tweeted by Mohammad Zubair, the co-founder of the propaganda fact-checking website Alt News. He claimed that Golu Gurjar and his friends were assaulting Mohsin because he is a Muslim. In order to portray the narrative of Muslims being persecuted by Hindus, he emphasized on the identities of the people in the video. The tweet has received more than 75,000 retweets and 11.2k likes so far.
Meer Faisal and Alishan Jafri, tweeting the viral video also claimed that Mohsin was brutally thrashed because of his religious identity. They attempted to feed their readers the so-called narrative that “Muslims are not safe in India.”
In addition, the propaganda accounts Drunk Journalist and Gabbar0099, who are constantly looking for reasons to justify their hatred of Hindus, claimed that a Muslim man named Mohsin had been brutally beaten and forced to lick his feet while receiving the most abhorrent of insults.
The another verified Twitter user, @/tanmoyofc, who appears to be a Hinduphobic, tweeting the video wrote that a Muslim youth in Madhya Pradesh, was thrashed by two Hindu supremacists, kidnapped in a car and forced to lick their feet.
Many others came to the conclusion that the incident had a communal angle after seeing the tweet from these verified accounts. Here are a few tweets (Archive link 1, 2, and 3) that shows how some Twitter users inserted a communal viewpoint to suggest that Mohsin was harassed because of his Muslim identity and how minorities are under attack in India.

In our fact check, we found a tweet (Archive Link) by the Sub Inspector of Gwalior. The tweet states that when the viral video came to the notice of the police authorities, prompt action was taken, and charges of kidnapping and assault were filed against the four accused seen in the viral video.
It further states that of the four accused, two have already been arrested, one of whom is the main accused, and that police are on the hunt for the other two who will be arrested soon.
Moreover, the statement also discloses that the alleged victim and his accomplice from the viral video earlier attacked the accused on May 21, 2023, in the vicinity of Dabra police station, for which a case was registered and appropriate action was taken.
Hence, going by the conclusion given in the tweet, it becomes evident that there is no communal angle in the incident as the propagandists are trying to portray. The conflict appears to be a result of personal enmity between the accused and the alleged victim.
Furthermore, we did the keyword search on google and came across the report by etv bharat. According to the report, on May 21, 2023, the attack was carried out on Golu Gurjar when he went to Darbar to attend a wedding celebration. In the video shared by etv bharat, Golu is being attacked with sticks by four or five people. He got into an argument with a few others outside on the street, and as a result, they attacked Golu fatally. Later, he made a statement that the attack was carried out by Mohsin, Lala Pandit, Vansh Pathak, and their three associates.
This is the same incident which has been mentioned by the Gwalior Police in its statement.
We also obtained a copy of the FIR that was filed in this matter. Mantri Khan, also known as Mohsin, Lala Pandit, and Vansh Pathak, are the three accused named in the FIR.
According to a statement made by the complainant Chetan Sharma, he was present at his brother Prashant Sharma’s wedding on May 21, 2023, around 10:30 p.m. The accused named in the FIR arrived as Golu Gurjar and his companion were getting ready to pick up their vehicles and began striking them with a stick, this caused a head wound on the complainant. Along with hitting Golu with a stick, which resulted in blood pouring from his head, they were also hurling abuses at him.
Mohammad Zubair and his likes attempted to use this incident to further their anti-Hindu agenda. The truth is that, according to the police statement, there is no communal angle to the incident because the alleged victim and the accused were previously involved in a conflict where Mohsin and his accomplice had beaten them. Moreover, this conflict involves not just Mohsin but also two Hindus, proving that there is no communal angle to it.
