No, Amit Shah Did Not Call Pulwama Accused Moen Khalid, Viral Newspaper Clipping Is Fake

A newspaper clipping written in Gujarati is being shared on social media, claiming that, according to an IB report, Indian Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Pulwama mastermind Moen Khalid over the phone 18 times. This clipping is being circulated with the intent to tarnish the image of the Indian Home Minister and India itself.

Arun Prakash Mishra posted while sharing a newspaper cutting, ‘The initial registration of the RDX-laden vehicle used in the Pulwama attack was Gujarat (GJ).” – Shankar Singh Vaghela”Question Ajit Doval and the truth of Pulwama will come out. The day the truth comes out, the people who will hate Modi the most will be the people of the army.” – Raj Thackeray”Pay attention to these two statements…the tainted face of power will start appearing as clear as a mirror…!!!” – Jitendra Narayan.’

Fact Check

We began our fact-checking process by reviewing relevant media reports related to the claim. However, we found no credible reports or evidence indicating that the Intelligence Bureau (IB) stated Amit Shah had 18 phone conversations with Pulwama mastermind Moen Khalid.

To investigate further, we examined the National Investigation Agency (NIA) chargesheet on the Pulwama attack. The chargesheet lists 19 terrorists, including both Pakistani nationals and locals from Jammu and Kashmir. However, none of them are named Moen Khalid, contradicting the claim made in the newspaper clipping.

Additionally, we reviewed Amit Shah’s statement following the Pulwama attack on February 14, 2019. On February 23, he stated, “Recently, terrorists attacked CRPF personnel, resulting in the loss of 40 soldiers. There is anger among the citizens of the country. But today, I want to assure you all that our government, under PM Modi, has a zero-tolerance policy toward terrorism. The sacrifice of our jawans in Kashmir will not be in vain. Over the past five years, the BJP government has given a strong response to terrorism—whether through a bullet-for-bullet approach or surgical strikes, the Modi government has never hesitated for a moment.”

Three days after Amit Shah’s statement, on February 26, India conducted a preemptive, non-military airstrike on a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror camp in Balakot, Pakistan, reportedly killing between 150 and 300 terrorists. Italian journalist Francesca Marino reported that 130 to 170 JeM terrorists were killed in the strike, while former Pakistani diplomat Agha Hilaly later claimed the death toll could be as high as 300.

Thus, the claim that Amit Shah spoke to Pulwama mastermind Moen Khalid 18 times is entirely baseless. There is no evidence to support it. In contrast, India’s response to the Pulwama attack involved airstrikes targeting a JeM training camp in Pakistan, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of terrorists.
