Many Hindu organizations in the state of Karnataka have been campaigning against halal certification since the beginning of 2022. This group has filed a memorandum outlining the reasons behind the campaign. According to the memorandum, Muslim organizations are earning crores of rupees through halal certification and using the money for anti-national activities.
In the midst of the ongoing campaigning against halal certification, the Times of India report headline states that the Karnataka government is considering introducing a bill prohibiting the sale of halal meat in the state.
On Twitter, a user with the handle Asian Muslims, who shared the newspaper cutting of the TOI report, claimed in a tweet that the BJP government is planning to ban halal meat in Karnataka.
Fact Check
We started our research with a keyword search for “bill to ban halal meat in Karnataka” and came across a report by the Hindustan Times. According to the Hindustan Times source, the Karnataka Legislative Council intends to introduce a private bill to prohibit Muslim groups from issuing halal certificates.
Various groups, according to Ravi Kumar, state general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party, are collecting money to provide this certification in an unlawful manner. Previously confined to meat, Halal certification has recently been expanded to encompass cosmetics and culinary items, among other things.
His concern is directed at Muslim organizations that illegally certify halal items and charge lakhs of rupees for this certification, despite the fact that the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the government institution in charge of certification.
During our following research, we also uncovered a letter written by BJP MLC Ravi Kumar to the chairman, Legislative Council. After translating the letter, we found that Ravikumar stated in his letter to the chairman that this bill wants to prohibit any institution from advertising a food product with the claim that it has been certified by a religious organization. Other than the government agency, FSSAI, no other group should be authorized to grant food product certification so it can ensure the safety and quality standards of the food product.
Hence, the TOI’s headline is misleading. The bill planning to being introduced is designed to seek a restriction on “Halal certification” rather than Halal meat. The misleading headline might make people assume that the government is contemplating a ban on halal meat.
