Mehbooba Mufti’s statement of being under house arrest due to Amit Shah’s visit is fake

Mehbooba Mufti, the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, tweeted on October 30, 2022, expressing concern over the suspension of basic fundamental rights while stating that she planned to travel Pattan to attend the wedding of one of her staff but she was under house arrest. This was during Home Minister Amit Shah’s three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir.

Fact Check

As the situation in J&K returns to normal with the repeal of Article 370, Mehbooba Mufti’s claim seems questionable. As a result, our team undertook research to determine if the claim made by the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir is true.

As the issue was concerned with law and order of J&K we looked into the statement of J&K and Srinagar police to know their response regarding this matter. During our research, we came across a tweet by Srinagar Police in which they denied Mehbooba Mufti’s claim and stated that Mehbooba Mufti is free to travel wherever she wants. There was no restrictions on any type of travel. The image in which the lock is visible is inside of her own residence. While their is no lock outside of the gate as per the images shared by Srinagar Police.

Even after Srinagar’s Police denied Mehbooba Mufti’s claim, she further stated in a tweet that she was finally allowed to leave her residence only after Amit Shah headed back to Delhi. Srinagar Police in a response requested her to check credentials of persons who are repeatedly feeding her with false information and said that the HM is very much in Srinagar itself & attending different programs.

In our analysis we found that during the HM’s visit to J&K, Mehbooba Mufti was not house arrested and repeatedly gave a fake statement, despite the Srinagar Police refuted her statement multiple times.
