A disturbing news of Manjari Rai, a girl from Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, who committed suicide, is fiercely going viral on Twitter. Many Twitter users have shared this news, stating that the incident took place recently.
The verified Twitter account Arun Prakash Mishra on July 7, sharing visuals of her suicide wrote that Manjari Rai has committed suicide. She left a suicide note in which she held BJP leader Bhim Gupta responsible for her death. The dead victim said that the BJP leader harassed her and continually put pressure on her, which led to her suicide.
He also used the suicide of Bollywood star Sushant Singh as an example, writing, “When Sushant Singh committed suicide, no note was discovered. Everyone was saying that if the suicide note is found, the culprit will be hanged immediately. Is Bhim Gupta going to be hanged now?”
Another Twitter account, @/Armankh09652552, making the same claim wrote, ” In Uttar Pradesh the government employee Manjari Rai committed suicide and left a suicide note. The news is missing from Godi media.”
He continued by saying that BJP leader Bhim Gupta is mentioned in the suicide note. Manjari has made allegations that she killed herself because he was harassing and pressuring her. The tweet has so far garnered 576 retweets.
Apart from that, the leader of Samajwadi party, Dr. Virendra Yadav, who is an MLA from Jangipur Constituency, according to his bio, wrote, “The woman PCS executive officer Manjari Rai posted in Maniyar Nagar Panchayat of Ballia committed suicide after being fed up with the conspiracy against her. It is very sad.”
Additionally, the Twitter accounts Manish Kumar Rai, Jai Prakash Anchal, and Badshah Gurjar Boy made the same claim and sought justice for Manjari Rai.
In the start of our research, we did the keyword search “Manjari Rai and Bhim Gupta” and came across many media reports.
An article from India Times dated July 8, 2020 states that the incident took place about three years ago. Manjari Rai lived in the Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh’s Kanuan village. She was a PCS officer in charge of Maniyar Nagar Panchayat as executive officer.
She hung herself from the ceiling on July 6, 2020, to end her life. Her corpse was discovered hanging from an open window the next morning by her neighbours, who called the police. She left a two- to three-line suicide note that said, “I came safely from cities like Mumbai and Delhi but here i have been falsely implicated for political motivation.” The suicide note mentions the implication of the strategy.
According to DGP Varanasi Zone Brij Bhushan, she did not mention any further information about political motivations or made any other references to incidents.
Our team acquired an FIR copy filed by Manjari Rai’s brother against six people in connection to her suicide. On July 8, 2020, at the Ballia police station, a FIR was filed under IPC section 306 (abetment of suicide) against the chairman of Maniyar Nagar Panchyat, Bhim Gupta, tax clerk Vinod Singh, computer operators Akhilesh Kumar, former EO Sanjay Rao, her driver Chandan and some unidentified persons with Kotwali police station was filed.
He alleged in a FIR that the Nagar Panchayat Chairman and several workers had put her under unlawful pressure to allow the wrongful completion of development work tenders and payment, which she was refusing to do. The authorities were upset with her as a result. She then contacted with District Magistrate Ballia and took a three-month gap from her charge. When she resumed her charge, she discovered that multiple payments had been made with her fictitious signature.
Furthermore, Bhim Gupta had turned himself up at the court of judicial magistrate Ballia nearly four months after Manjari’s suicide. In addition, when the police began their investigation, Chandan, Manjari Rai’s driver, Vinod, the clerk, and Akhilesh Kumar, the computer operator, were all arrested.
Vinod had been granted anticipatory bail, but in March 2023, Chandan and Akhilesh received sentences of seven years in solitary confinement. Each of them was also given a Rs 10,000 fine by the court. Moreover, Sanjay Rao, was given clean chit by the police.
Therefore, taking into account the aforementioned information, the assertion made by the Twitter users is misleading. The incident happened three years ago, and the verdict was already rendered. The three accused, including Bhim Gupta, are convicted, while clerk Vinod received anticipatory bail and Sanjay Rao was given clean chit.
