Journalist Ranvijay’s misleading claim about BJP distributing free gas cylinders in UP

On October 23, 2022, a day before Diwali, journalist Ranvijay Singh, shared a video clip of Amit Shah promising free gas cylinder on Holi and Diwali if BJP returns to power in Uttar Pradesh. Ranvijay went on to say that the people of UP continued waiting for a free cylinder during Holi, but the cylinder was never located. People in Uttar Pradesh are now waiting for free cylinders during Diwali, which is tomorrow.

Fact Check

In our research, we found that Amit Shah had indeed promised to give free gas cylinders to the people in Uttar Pradesh. Ahead of its fifth phase of election in Uttar Pradesh which took place on February 27, 2022, Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, addressing the rally in Prayagraj, while stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has provided gas cylinders to 1.67 crore houses of Uttar Pradesh, promised to give free gas cylinders on Holi and Diwali if BJP returns to power in Uttar Pradesh.

However, we discovered that as per the TOI report dated March 16, 2022, when Amit Shah promised to provide free gas cylinders in Uttar Pradesh, the Yogi government, under the Ujjwala Scheme, decided that the distribution of gas cylinders would not be linked to any religious connotation of being given out exclusively on the occasion of Holi and Diwali. Instead, the BJP administration in Uttar Pradesh determined that the two time periods would be fixed: January to March and October to December.

Additionally, we found that, according to a Press Information Bureau dated April 24, 2022, under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Scheme, LPG coverage in India has increased to 104.1% as of January 2022, up from 62% in May 2016. PMUY beneficiaries’ per capita consumption has grown from 3.01 refills in 2019-20 to 3.66 refills in Fiscal Year 2021-22 (till Feb 2022).

According to a WHO study (2018), the Ujjwala Yojana has supplied free LPG connections to 37 million women living below the poverty line. The Ujjwala Scheme benefits several Indian states, with Uttar Pradesh receiving the most number of LPG connections.

The claim by Ranvijay Singh is misleading. The BJP had promised free gas cylinders during Holi and Diwali, however under the Ujjwala Scheme, the government chose to divide the distribution of free gas cylinders into two time periods.
