On November 15 and 16, 2022, Indonesia hosted the annual two-day G20 conference. The two-day session was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping, US President Joe Biden, and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, among other heads from the group other than the European Union. PM Modi met with these leaders and conducted a conversation about current world concerns.
A few days after the G20 summit, serial liar Sathish Reddy, the TRS Party’s social media convenor, claimed in a tweet that S. Jaishankar, the Minister of External Affairs, had given a statement saying PM Modi met President Biden in Bali and they had a detailed discussion about technology, advanced computing, and regional and global development, while the White House Press Secretary said there were no special discussions.
Many bilateral discussions were held between India and other countries at the G2O summit. Because Sathish Reddy’s claim has been primarily focused on President Biden and Prime Minister Modi, our team decided to thoroughly study the discussion between India and the USA at the G20 event, as well as the press briefing of Karine Jean-Pierre.
During our research, we discovered a transcript of the bi-lateral meeting that took place in Bali between Prime Minister Modi and President Biden on the official site of the White House. According to the meeting minutes, President Biden met with India’s Prime Minister and Indonesia’s President Widodo during the event.
The leaders emphasized how the G20 holds the ability to bring together major economies in order to boost sustainable and inclusive growth and how it can tackle the continuing climate, energy, and food crises, reinforce global health architecture, and encourage technology change.
Furthermore, to fact-check the authenticity of W.H. Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre’s statement as stated in Sathish Reddy’s tweet, we read the transcript of the latest two Press Gaggles by Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, which is accessible on the White House official site.
According to the transcript of the press briefing held on November 18, 2022, Jean-Pierre was asked about the meeting between President Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G20 conference, to which she answered, “As, you know, I know you followed this very closely. President Biden spoke with the Prime Minister and Indonesian President on the margins of the summit, and we issued a readout of their trilateral meeting. India played an essential role in negotiating the summit’s declaration. Prime Minister Modi made it clear today’s era must not be of war, and that’s a direct quote from the President. Among other priorities, we have a path forward to addressing current food and energy security challenges while continuing our efforts to build a resilient global economy. Prime Minister Modi’s relationship was critical to this outcome and we look forward to supporting India’s G20 presidency next year.”
In another Press Briefing held on November 21, 2022, Jean-Pierre was asked about Mayor Garcetti being approved as the United States’ envoy to India, and if India has a “important enough relationship” to need an ambassador. She replied, “India is a very important relationship that we have. You saw the President greet and meet very briefly with Prime Minister Modi just last week when he was in Bali. So clearly, it’s an important relationship that we truly respect. As for Mayor Garcetti, we are committed to getting him through the process. We’re continuing to talk to the Senate on making that happen. That is a priority of ours. And I just don’t have anything further to share on any strategy or anything else moving forward on that.”
In both press briefings where Jean-Pierre was asked about the G20 summit meeting in regard to India, she never said that there was no special discussion between Prime Minister Modi and President Biden. And according to the White House transcript, PM Modi and President Biden had indeed discussed and focused on the topics mentioned by S. Jaishankar. Hence, Sathish Reddy’s claim is misleading.
