The Aam Aadmi Party launched a month-long anti-garbage campaign on September 14, 2022, to draw attention to sanitation-related problems and expose the incompetence of the MCD, a civic body led by the BJP. In the midst of the protests against the BJP-led MCD, the AAP party’s leaders claimed that the MCD is planning to set up 16 landfill sites across Delhi.

The AAP party has previously made similar claims. According to the report by The Wire from April 2022, senior AAP leader Durgesh Pathak said during a press conference that the BJP had sought national government for land to build a new dump rather than trying to clean up the city’s current ones.

In our research, we came across the statement by Praveen Shankar Kapoor, the spokesperson of BJP, on Twitter. In a response to Manish Sisodia’s claim, Praveen Shankar Kapoor, clarified that the MCD has no plans to construct any additional dump sites in Delhi. And asked Manish Sisodia to apologize to the public for lying.

Our further research led us to the statement by the Municipal Corporation Of Delhi. No additional dump sites are anticipated by the MCD, according to news reports by TOI, Pioneer, Navbharat Times, and Virat Vaibhav shared on MCD’s Twitter handle. The news reports stated that on Thursday the Municipal Corporation Of Delhi in “unambiguous term” said that there is no plans to establish new sanitary landfill sites. MCD, though, is making a concerted effort to flatten the current ones.

The MCD further said that it was working assiduously to level the existing landfill sites at Bhalswa, Okhla, and Ghazipur and was pleased to reveal that it had succeeded in lowering the height of the waste mounds by 10-15 metres in a few locations.

The MCD also added that the company is making every effort to level the dump sites. By using trommel machines, providing free inert and C&D garbage, selling refuse-driven fuel to industry, encouraging people to separate their waste at the source, and forbidding the use of single-use plastic, the height of landfills has been reduced.

The aforementioned information reveals that the MCD does not have plans to build landfills in Delhi. Hence, the AAM party’s claim is false. The BJP has criticised the AAP party for making similar bogus statements in the past.
