As the country braces up for the next general elections scheduled for 2024, the political landscape is mutating at a conspicuous pace. Pro-patriotic forces are trying to demonstrate India’s height globally, while opposition forces are trying to demean India by pointing out trivial affairs. One such incident is doing the rounds on social media. A picture of mushrooms growing inside the train coaches is orbiting on the Internet with the claim that this is a situation of the Vishwa Guru Indian Railway.

A rabid India hater on Twitter wrote, “No other country in the world can boast this technology. Indian railways is now cultivating mushrooms in train bogies( a favourite food of VishwaGu). Abhi market mein naya aaya hein, jaldi sabko forward karo aur Acche din ki ashirwad pao. Achhe din aagaya..”

Another user, Kakistocracy wrote, “Indian Railway Organic Mushroom Farm. Hope Modiji will inaugurate the harvest.”

One more Twitter user shared the photo of a train coach with the caption, “New technology from Modiji”

As you can see, this picture went viral on the internet with a somewhat similar claim. However, the question is when was this picture taken? Does this photo represent the contemporary, world-class railway infrastructure India is building?

We will find out soon.

A keyword search on Google led to the Reddit post shared seven years ago. The post description reads, “Indian Railways growing mushrooms in trains in order to serve fresh, creamy mushroom soup to the passengers.”

In addition to this, India Today also published an article on September 29, 2016. The report is titled, “Soup, anybody? Photo of mushrooms growing out of a train’s floor goes viral.”

After learning that this picture went viral on the internet, we looked for the same picture on Twitter. We found that the Indian Railway mushroom picture was widely shared in 2016.

A Twitter handle going by the name History of India tweeted the same photo back in 2016. He wrote, “After Increasing fare, Indian Railways growing mushrooms in trains in order to serve fresh creamy mushroom soup to the passengers.”

With the above evidence presented in the context of the Twitter post of mushrooms mushrooming inside the train coach, it’s evident that the picture was from the year 2016.

The picture is being shared widely with the malicious agenda of defaming the Indian Railway’s rock-solid infrastructure. Recently, the Financial Times reported that “Indian Railways emerges as a major exporter of coaches, rakes.”
