At the beginning of our research, we did a reverse image search of the viral photo and found that the photo originates from Bangladesh and had no connection with the ongoing Indian farmers’ protest.

According to Bangladeshi news media portal 24onbd dated February 16, 2024, which featured the same image in its article, heavy firing took place on the border between Shahpori Dwip (island) and St. Martin in Teknaf. There was firing from Myanmar side which created panic like situation among the local people. The firing took the lives of three people. Due to this situation at the border, the sea route was closed for tourist ships as well as local ships.

As per another Bangladeshi news portal, Chattolar Khabor, Shahjahan, one of the residents of Shahpori Island, said, “The world was shaken by the sound of gunshots. It has become impossible to stay at home with small children due to fear. Two people, including a local woman, died. Tumbru in such an incident. God forbid, if this happens here then who will take responsibility? We are very scared.” He further said, “Bullets from Myanmar have hit the lids of dexi (pans) in the kitchen of local people living in the border area of Bangladesh.”

Tension has increased between Bangladesh and Myanmar after Bangladesh provided refugee to one million Rohingya. This tension can be traced back to the events of August 2017 when Rohingya Muslims fled to Bangladesh to escape violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine state. The government of Myanmar has been accused of human rights abuses against the Rohingya and the refugee crisis has been a source of strained relations between the two neighboring countries.

In conclusion, the picture going viral on X has no connection with the current farmer protests. This picture is from Bangladesh, capturing the moment a bullet struck the lid of a pan in a resident’s kitchen in Shahpori Dwip.
