An alleged photograph of Jana Sangh founder Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, seen with members of the Muslim League, is circulating on social media. The post alleges that those who cooperated with the Muslim League contributing to the eventual creation of India and Pakistan were linked to the BJP’s ideological lineage.

Kirti Azad, wrote “This is a very rare photograph. Evidence of the double speak of @RSSorg and @BJP4India BJP founder Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee and his Hindu Mahasabha formed coalition govts with Jinnah’s Muslim League in Bengal, Sind & NWFP. He became Bengal Finance Minister under AK Fazlul Hag, after Hag presented a 1940 resolution calling for Pakistan.” (Archived Link)

Another user Ved Prakash Vidrohi, wrote “#Muslim_League by cozying up to form the government, #BJP’s old form Jana Sangh founder #Shyama_Prasad_Mukherjee! During the freedom movement, the stooges, informants, and agents of the British regime were also the ideological ancestors of the BJP! Those who joined hands with the Muslim League to initiate the creation of two countries, India-Pakistan, were also #BJP ancestors!” (Archived Link)

Fact Check

In our fact-check investigation, we conducted a reverse image search of the viral photograph. This search led us to the original picture, identified as the Muslim League Working Committee group photo uploaded on 1 October 1937. Upon closer examination, it became clear that Shyama Prasad Mukherjee is not present in the image.

We found the viral picture taken from another angle on Getty. Upon examining the image, we confirmed that the person seen in the photograph matches Sir Khawaja Nizamuddin, a prominent Muslim League leader of that era. Khawaja Nizamuddin was a Pakistani politician who served as the second Governor-General of Pakistan from 1948 to 1951, and later as the second Prime Minister from 1951 to 1953.

This confirms that the photograph is from a Muslim League event and the person seen is Sir Nizamuddin, not Shyama Prasad Mukherjee.
