A video is becoming viral on social media, which has triggered outrage with the claim that “Muslim” men have been flogged by the Gujarat Police with the crowd chanting “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”. They have always been a victim of violence and have been served with “injustice” under the BJP government.
The viral video was shared by Anti Hindu party AIMIM’s Chief Asaduddin Owaisi and many leftist and Islamist Twitter handles like Arfa Khanum Sherwani, Ashok Swain, Indian American Council and HindutvaWatch page.
Islamist propaganda Journalist Saba Naqvi said that the image will remain forever engraved in people’s memory. She wrote “So the next time you read of mass floggings in theocratic states don’t feel superior and say we have the rule of law in Democratic India. This image should stay with us.”
Fact Check
Our team conducted research to verify the accuracy of the claim. In our research, through the keyword search using Public flogging in Gujarat, we came across a report by Indian Express. Through the Indian Express article, we got to know that the alleged video is from Gujarat’s Kheda district in Matar Takula village.
According to the report, FIR in this case which cited as per the complaint of the village’s Sarpanch it is stated that as the family members and women began playing Garba, a group of Muslim men in the village came and began abusing women, asking them to return home. Within seconds, the mob gathered and destroyed the DJ’s truck before pelting stones at the crowd. It further stated that the women at the event was being assaulted by women from the mob. Furthermore, the sarpanch said that the police had detained and punished the offenders at the site where Garba was held.
We also found a tweet by ANI news agency. As per the ANI’s tweet, the DSP of the Kheda district, Rajesh Gadhiya, said that the mob that attacked the Garba celebration was led by two people named Arif and Zahir, who first created the disturbance, which later turned into stone pelting. As a result, six people were injured. He further added on that out of 150-200 people, 43 people have been identified and booked under sections. Among the 43 accusers, 10-11 accused have been detained for interrogation.
In our analysis we found the Gujarat police flogged Muslim men because they stormed the garba celebration, threw stones, and were eve teasing women present at the celebration. The narrative created by leftists and AIMIM that Muslim men were flogged because they belonged to a minority group is entirely misleading.
