Fact Check
To verify the viral video, we ran a keyword search on Google. The search led us to a report by One India, published on July 31, 2019. In the report, we spotted the same keyframe that is visible in the viral video on X. Both have ‘Vyapari Sangh, Residents Association’ written on them.
According to the report, the incident is five years old. It is from Indore, Madhya Pradesh where traders put up posters with the slogan ‘Kamal Ka Phool, Hamari Bhool’ (The lotus flower, our mistake) outside their shops. Under the Smart City Project in Indore, the road was to be widened to 60 feet, which would result in the demolition of many small shops and houses.
The traders and residents met with Municipal Commissioner Ashish Singh but returned without reaching any decision. In protest, the traders closed the market for three days. After three days, they reopened their shops but hung banners outside them that read ‘Kamal Ka Phool, Humari Bhool’ (The lotus flower, our mistake). The traders complained that due to the road widening, 15,000 people would face a livelihood crisis.
In conclusion, the video showing traders putting up posters to express their resentment against the BJP is five years old and from Indore. The displeasure was due to the road widening project, which would have resulted in the demolition of many shops and houses.
