Fake claim of Priya Singh winning World Bodybuilding Championship in Thailand shared with casteism angle

A Woman bodybuilder from Rajasthan has been making headlines. From breaking stereotypes to making India proud, several outrageous claims are being attributed to her. However several propaganda portals with vested interest are highlighting her caste angle more than her achievement and that she faced discrimination due to being a Dalit athlete.

The propaganda portal, The Mooknayak, made sensational claim about Priya Singh winning international championship and due to this, Rajasthan Govt. made her the Brand Ambassador of social justice.

Taking forward their propaganda, The Mooknayak goes on to claiming that International championship winning athlete faced discrimination due to her caste.

Najir Hussain, journalist of Mooknayak, tweeted about the achievement of Priya Singh with a caption “Priya Singh Meghwal who brought gold medal in Bodybuilding tournament held in Thailand is awarded with real heroes of India in Mumbai.”

Another similar propaganda portal centered around casteism, Dalit Times also made claim about Priya Singh hailing from Dalit community made country proud by winning international championship.

We can’t verify the casteism claim made by these fake propaganda portals but lets dive through the other claims being made. Did Priya Singh really win International Women’s Bodybuilding Competition held in Thailand?

Fact Check

We started our research by googling news about Priya Singh and tried to get as much information as possible from main stream media. Our research led us to the tweet shared by the First India News on their official Twitter handle. In their tweet they had shared that natural Bodybuilding Championships held in December 2022 was organized by the Natural Bodybuilding Union International(A non-governmental organization from Punjab). Priya Singh got the gold medal in this tournament. This is not a Govt. affiliated tournament and has no validity from any recognized sports body.

After further research, We came to know about the officially recognized 13th World Bodybuilding & Physique Sports Championship held in Phuket, Thailand in December 2022.

After visiting the World Bodybuilding And Physique Sports Federation website, we came to know about all the participants. No Indian woman from any category won the gold medal. Solima Jajo got the second position(silver medal) in the open category of Women’s junior Model Physique 165 cm while Veena Chouhan secured the third position(bronze medal) in Women’s Model Physique over 170 CM. Gantsolmon Indra from Mongolia and Chanyapat Korparapirom from Thailand are the gold medalists from these 2 categories. There is no mention of Priya Singh in any category of this tournament on the website of wbpsf.org.

Furthermore, we found the First India report. As per the report, Rajasthan State Body Building Association wrote a letter to CM Ashok Gehlot after she was awarded by Rajasthan Govt. demanding an inquiry into fake sports associations. Congress Govt. in Rajasthan even made her the Brand Ambassador of Social Justice Empowerment Department which was objected by Rajasthan sports association.

According to Lallantop report, Association President Naveen Yadav wrote the letter to the Chief Minister of Rajasthan stating that bodybuilder Priya Singh award was given by a private NGO in Punjab and not by any recognized body-building association. For the last few days, an atmosphere is being created that Priya Singh has brought a gold medal but this competition is neither conducted by any recognized sports association nor by any state govt or sports dept. Some Sportsperson is trying to steal the credit of other hardworking sportsperson by buying such awards.
